Smart Key Programing

As a scuba diver I share the surfers' delimina regarding safely securing the smart key/fob. I have a Toyota cut and programmed dumb' key for opening the driver's door. However, where do I leave the Smart Key w/out leaving the car unlocked.

1. Wrap in alfoil & stow in a key safe attached to the car

2. Smart Key programable to lock all doors & driver's door accessable by 'programmed dumb' key

Designers not so smart with the 'smart key' for an outdoors/activities car.

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a surf lock and found that you can put it on the back passanger door handle or on the bullbar and the car stays locked or if the second key is in the car you have to use the button on the remote to unlock the car

Isn't it designed so you can take the metal key (this is what I assume you're calling the dumb key) out of the smart key fob, leave the smart key in the car and lock the door with the metal key?

Yes, But if you leave the FOB in the car and someone touches your door handles the car will unlock.

You are able to leave the fob in the boot/cargo area as there is no sensor in there. Then lock the car with the key via the drivers door. This is what I do when going to the beach.

I've never actually tried it but I thought that was the whole point of the metal key?

You are able to leave the fob in the boot/cargo area as there is no sensor in there. Then lock the car with the key via the drivers door. This is what I do when going to the beach.

There is a key sensor in the cargo area, it's on the floor under the carpet. So if you're leaving your key there and it works then it shouldn't matter where you leave the key in the car. I'm curious now so I'll do some testing this weekend.

Maybe the fact that the car is locked by the key it disables the sensors for the fob?

Dealer said you can lock the fob in the car using the manual key... 2017 model anyway.

I tested this tonight. On my 2010 GX I can definitely leave the fob in the car, lock the door with the metal key and it won't open/unlock with the fob in it.
