  • Rear Middle Child Restraint

I currently have 2 child seats fitted in the 2nd row, a forward facing seat on driver's side and rearward facing seat on the passenger side. I want to move the rearward facing passenger side seat to the middle for an upcoming trip to make room for an adult passenger in the rear, however I am having trouble with the installation. It is a tight fit, but the biggest issue I have is that the seat belts are not locking seat belts. (I believe Toyota calls this an Auto Locking Retractor (ALR) seat belt). On every car I have owned prior to the Prado I could pull the seat belt out fully to engage the auto lock mechanism that is used to keep the child seat in nice and tight without the seat belt feeding back out. I can't do that with the Prado so I have to use a gated buckle to lock the shoulder strap and the waist lash together. This makes the installation so much more difficult and it is very hard to get the belt tight enough for it to be considered a safe installation. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on installation of the child seat to the middle of the second row?

P.S. I have installed many child seats int he past so I would consider myself a seasoned novice at this. I have never fitted a child seat to the middle though!

P.S. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, the PP search function is not working at the moment for some reason.

    Cheers,

I have a new born, rearward facing seat on the passenger side, toddler booster seat on the drivers side and my eldest sits in between with no child seat. I use the gated buckle and have no issues with it being loose. They are designed to work one way... maybe reverse the way the curve in the buckle is pointing??
As you, 3 kids later so possibly a seasoned novice but certainly no expert
    Cheers, Leon

Thanks Snaga. The issue I have is that the forward facing toddler seat on driver's side is quite large and it impedes on the area where the middle seat should sit. It means that the middle seat is not sitting perfectly centre and makes it difficult to latch the buckle. in when the belt is really tight. gated buckle works well, although it is not as convenient as the ALR style belt.........

But i found a fix, albeit a but agricultural. After getting the middle seat as tight as possible, I ratchet strapped the middle seat to the driver's side seat and they are both set in there like concrete. No movement at all.

We had 3 toddler seats across the second row in our 120 series until recently - a very tight fit. I never had any problems getting the seatbelts nice and tight - just don't try to take them out too often. Probably best not to anyway when you see what accumulates under those seats after a couple of years...

It may be worth your while buying a new child seat that is smaller. We managed to fit 3 seats in a corolla, was tight but fitted.
