  • 1KD-FTV fuel rail return line failure

    HI All,

Currently posting 450ks' from home in a motel room waiting for a replacement bleed off/ return hardline to be shipped and fitted.

Was on the final stretch home while the missus was driving and as we're pulling into town and slow down we got a diesel smell into the cab. Closer inspection of the fuel gauge showed that in the last 131km we'd 'used' 45L of fuel as I recall seeing we'd just cracked 1000k's on on the trip and had used the first take. Additional observation but not really an obvious indicator at the time was the frosted look on the back window.

Pulled over to find a trail of diesel up the road, and once we stopped a good puddle of it formed under the car. Closer inspection and some cranking showed that there is a very small crack in the return line from the common rail.

This got me thinking and looking at things closer. I didn't' think to grab a picture of it, however I suspect that this failure in my case was going to happen at some stage or in a different place regardless..

A while back taking a look at things under the bonnet I found a bracket on the hardline was not bolted on to anything with the engine idling it was shaking around and jingling madly. I've since found that it appears to be a vibration dampening bracket. Eventually the shaking of the engine would have caused the bracket to wear a hole in the line resulting in the same failure, just higher up. I took the bracket off and kept it safe until the next service to get it put back on. Thankfully the kids were nice enough to throw it out during a clean, I forgot about it and now I'm down a bracket and a line.

SO, there's two lessons here. One, check that bracket and ensure that if there is work done on it, turns out, its pretty important.

Now I'm trying to find a part number for that tiny little guy to get it put on at the same time hopefully tomorrow so we can get back on the road.

Had anyone been working on said bracket for it to be undone?

See if any of that helps. Once you get a part number you can also then enter it into Amayama for pricing.
