  • What gauges to get?

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a Saas pillar pod soon for a neat install of a dual boost and egt gauge. This however will leave me with another spare gauge spot so I'm wondering what people would consider to be the next most important gauge?
I've already got a dual battery monitor so no need for that. So I could get anything like water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, transmission temperature...
    Thanks!

I cant ever see any value in using another water temp gauge if the input will read what the ECU is.

I've seen it quite a lot on subaru's where the engine would catastrophically overheat but the water temp sensors are faulty.
So, getting another gauge will tell you exactly the same thing your current factory one is.

Your idea on a transmission temp gauge is probably the best bet if you've got an auto box. When towing heavy loads its great to be able to keep an eye on it.

Oil temp can be handy if you are concerned about pushing your vehicle while its cold. Takes a bit longer for oil temp to come up to spec after water temp does. exactly how much im not sure, never had one fitted.

oil pressure would be the more handy of the two. oil temp gauge wont tell you if mid drive your oil pump or system has failed. if you see the pressure plummet (major oil leak... how can you tell unless you see it out the back or have some angry plastered motorists behind you honking and flashing which could mean anything...) or even blockages, pressure sky rocket. you can spot it straight away, stop the vehicle and save lots of damage. an oil temp gauge wont give you that feed back.

Oil pressure gauges also semi serves as an oil temp gauge. as the oil heats up, the pressure will decrease as its able to move the liquid around more easily. you will know your oil has come up to temp when the oil pressure has stabilised.

good that you found a boost and egt gauge. being able to see a turbo thats shat itself is pretty hand plus how hard your pushing it by EGT. smart choice on the combo gauge.

keen to know how you go with the install. have been looking at the pillar pod myself and am curious how good it is.

Why not get something like a Scan Gauge that plugs into the OBD2 port under the dash? These will measure the parameters you're interested in & no wiring, plumbing or mounting pods required. Will sit easily just behind the steering wheel or anywhere else convenient.

I had thought about one of them, however (and I could be completely wrong here), can't they only tell you data from sensors the vehicle already has? I imagine the Prado doesn't have both a boost or EGT sensor? These are the main two I'm wanting to monitor.
Another reason is I quite like the look of the pillar pod and it's easy to read. I don't classify the scangauge as something easy to read at a glance.
Happy to be convinced otherwise though!

Half right (or half wrong). A scan gauge can give you boost pressure but not EGT. It can also give auto transmission temp, both main box temp and/or torque converter.

Hmm that might be something to consider.
Will probably get the pillar and a scangauge then haha

The Scan Gauge can read values for both Boost & EGT. Boost is one of the standard readings on the gauge but I had to program one of the X-Gauges to get a readout of EGT. It's not difficult to do but I'm not sure where the reading is taken from.

Hi Geo. Do you know if that is the same for the 3L diesel or only the 2.8
