  • Rear door striker nuts fallen into body during adjustment. How can i get to them?

Was doing a service on my car and adjusting the rear left door striker was supposed to be the simplest job of the day.

I backed off the bolts a little too fast, and now the nuts that hold these bolts have fallen into the door. You can see the part im talking about below:

there is no clear rear access, as it is between two panels; and im not sure how far down the channel goes (ie is it possible for the nuts to have moved down to the lowest channel?)

What i have done so far is get a retractable snake magnet, but i just cant seem to find it through the holes pictured. not to mention im not entirely sure how id attach the bolts if i ever did find them

Ive also pulled off the bottom trim, but i cant see the nuts in there

Has anyone else had experience with this? at the moment ive got some rope holding my door shut

Haven't got a 90 series to have a look, but suspect that the nut was originally welded to the frame and broke off.

I would consider drilling a hole somewhere inconspicuous to access the nut, perhaps from the inside?

Hey Krypto, thanks for the reply!

The nuts aren't welded to the frame because they need to allow a little bit of play so you can adjust the door locking.

That and i didn't unbolt it that fast haha

Here's hoping i dont need to go that far! but if i do, im hoping i could find an image of a 95 with that panel off so i can know where it fell to

Think the nuts will be spot welded to a thin piece of metal (or perhaps it's just a tapping bar) that's usually held semi captive by a "U" shaped retainer spot welded to the frame.
Your magnet idea will be a bit difficult as it will be grabbing everything on the way.
I've had success with a bit of garden hose duct taped to the end of the vacuum for these jobs.
I would have thought it would be looking at you when the door sill trim is removed ??

In the past I have wasted many hours on similar problems trying to find a non invasive solution using magnets etc, when the easy solution is to do a minimal bit of damage (drill hole) in a non visible location (drill hole) and just get it sorted. Good luck with whatever you do.

One of those "Oh Sh!t" moments.
Like your thinking Steve, could source a rubber grommet large enough to cover an access hole then holesaw on opening to find and locate your fixing. Paint the cut edge a fit the grommet/plug.

Don't have a 90, but have you removed all interior trim?

Hey all good news! after many hours yesterday i finally got it out

What i had to do was take off the rear interior trim. i tried to avoid doing this, as it meant i had to disasssemble the drawer/bed system i made (album will be in a future post ) and i didnt believe it would be accessible from there, as there are 3 layers of panel:
                - the interior that the plastic trim clips to
                - the middle that the seatbelt and wiring run in front of
                - the outer

the door striker sits between the second and 3rd, but it turns out theres an access hole close to where the seatbelt runs. Using a magnet snake thing from SCA it was super easy to find and remove.

Also due to the size of the striker nut back plate (as carco mentioned) it is not possible for it to fall further down that channel; so luckily was not the 2 small nuts i was expecting

To re-install it after getting it out, i fed a length of rope through the hole of the panel and the striker back plate, and tied a slip knot behind it.
Pulling the rope, the plate fed into position and when a bolt was affixed (with the striker attached) the slip knot can be undone and pulled through, so the second bolt can be inserted

Im going to leave off the trim for now so i can install that led strip along that window ive been meaning to. thanks for your help!

Hopefully this helps anyone who falls into a similar problem
