  • Air filter bypassing

Hi all, I am wondering if anyone else has had issues with the engine air filter allowing dirt to bypass the side of the filter? As per the attached picture, the top of the filter is clean, the dust is not getting through the filter but rather appears to be going around it. I have seen this pre and post snorkel installation so I think it is a design issue myself. The car is a 2016 150 GXL.

200 series twin turbo has the same problem. I'd complain to Toyota. Dust through your engine can't be doing it much for longevity.

yes i noticed that problem , when i got to Cape York. I suspect the air filter housing flexes somehow , as the dust is only at one corner of the housing. I cleaned the MAF with the proper MAF cleaner spray while i replaced the filter. If the issue continues i'll apply some vaseline to the seals on the replacement filter.

Yeah I ha heard that about the 200. I have complained to Toyota, firstly told my filter was excessively dirty which it wasn't, I have kept it and then they had they had the nerve to tell me some dirt bypassing the filter is normal! I work in a mechanical w/shop, I have seen the result of dirt entry and you're right, it's not good for longevity!

Yeah Nudgebar, I was thinking of resorting to rubber grease myself. Thanks for the reply, while it is disturbing it is happening to others it reassures me in my dealings with Toyota when I tell them this is not normal and I am not alone!

Thanks gxl_d4d! That is perfect and a lot easier/cleaner than rubber grease or vaseline.
