  • Fitting 265/70 tyres to stock rims without suspension lift.

    Hi all,

I'm looking at replacing my current tyres which are the standard size for my 2010 150 GXL (265/65/R17). Two tyre shops in town (Gympie QLD) have told me that I need to fit a suspension lift to the prado to enable me to install the size tyres I want (265/70/R17) as they claim with stock springs etc. the tyres will scrub on various bits and pieces inside. This seems odd to me as raising a vehicle will not move the wheels any futhur away from various attachments behind the tyre. Just looking for anyone with first hand experience in fitting tyres to an unmodified car- The suspension will be getting raised in the coming weeks, just would like to know if I can do the tyres first. Looking at fitting BFG KO2's or Toyo Open Country AT's for refrence.

I have 265/70/17 on stock suspension and has been fine for the past year. Drove around the Kimberley last year too. Slight rubbing on the TJM bull are trim when reversing at full lock but easy to fix.

A suspension lift means the wheels are lower relative to the body most of the time so there is less chance of rubbing.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers, Nova

Okay, cheers mate. The fella from the Tyreright said that I'd be in danger of scrubbing the wheels on the upper control arms as there doesn't feel to be much of a gap between them and the sidewall of the tyre running stock sizes- Even though 265/70 isn't wider he said I'd probably have issues with it- Thats why I was curious about the lift- I can understand it making a difference if it was scrubbing on body panels, but to my limited understanding offset rims would be the only way to move the rubber away from the suspension components themselves?

      Cheers.

If your worried about touching the control arms wheel offset will help from memory +15 seem to be the peoples choice FJ cruiser wheels are an option

Tyre size written on the side wall and what they actually measure can vary from one manufacturer to the next

I fitted the equivalent size tyre in an 18" ( 265/65r18 ) and with the factory offset it only misses the upper control arm By Millimetres

If you can afford a set of rims a +15 or +10 will not only reduce the chance of touching but also improve the wheel stance which is handy off-road especially. 285s on +10 just sit flush with the guards so a 265 should be even better

Good to know- interesting there that the FJ rims have such an offset compared to the prado (my understanding is that the FJ shares the same platform as the 120?). Also, if you've got 18 inch rims I assume you have a VX or Kakadu? The salesman at one of the tyre shops I went to claimed that he put steel patrol rims on his 150 prado to solve the clearance issues since apparently they have the required offset and the same stud pattern (not sure if this is correct or not).

From memory factory Prado rim offset is +25 and FJ offset is +15

            Patrol 16x8 steel is +8.

Yes the Patrol along with a fair few share a 6 stud ( M12 ) x 137.9mm PCD ( 5.5" ) the hub sizes vary ideally you want a rim with a snug hub boar

I thought the FJ was of the 150 platform but I could be wrong

Dynamic wheels make a 17x8 steel to suit a Prado in a +10, this is the bang for buck option
Alternatively hunt around for FJ alloy. ( FJ forum is your best bet )

We have a Kakadu, happy with a 32" tyre but wish the wheels were a +10 a wider stance would better

Yeah, have been looking at some of the images on google of the 150 with the FJ rims- I kind of like it, makes them look a lot tougher. That could be something I might end up doing in years to come after I've got a bit more of the other stuff I want- next on the list is some roofracks and drawers (just trying to find some that don't cost a fortune- Which is tricky for drawers in particular).

Geeze mate, you're not wrong about the clearance- I guess you've always got a mud removal device for your tyres anyway

                    The photos are full lock.
Managed to get a few trips in with this setup, no rubbing or wear evident after the trips
Still not ideal, but I am over running 2 sets of wheels I was keen to retain the 18" alloys

Sorry to jump onboard, so will a ET-0 Offset rim with 285/70R17 clear everything with no lift?

Can confirm that the tyres do indeed fit, the only hitch being that my wheel cover no longer fits on- Although this leaves me room for the option of one of those bags to put over the tyre to carry out rubbish etc.

285/70r17 will fit with +10s from memory the front Mud flap needs some trimming that was it
I would have thought 285 on a Zero would protrude past the guards

Rear tyre cover won't fit and 15mm washers the space the tyre off the mount
