  • Rhino Roof Platforms

Ok just needing some advice as i havent been able to confirm on Dr Google as yet.

Im currently wanting to buy a Rhino Platform in the 2100mm long size (preferred) or tradie if i find a good 2nd hand deal on Bumtree

    http://www.rhinorack.com.au/products...1236mm-_ja9636

Can any1 confirm if the platforms that fit the 150 series also fit the 120 series, or are they different holes centres on the. My gut feeling is they dont but perhaps some1 in the know can confirm this for me..........I dont want the backbone fittings but the 6 feet style fittings as they give me a little more height tween the roof and underneath of the platform for cleaning

    Thanks

My understanding is they are totally different. Facebook message Rhino, I did and they replied really quickly.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

The platforms are common but the mounting centres on the roof are different on the 120 and 150. As such, the feet are also different. But the legs and platform are the same. There are compatibility charts on the Rhino website.

Rhino build different models to suit a small range of cars in each model. However if you do get a platform model that isn't Prado specific, you can always drill new holes to move the crossbars to suit the mounting centres on the roof.

Ok thanks for those replies gents and i suspected those answers, in that they arent really interchangeable unless i get the cordless out and start drilling.

i asked this as there are some 150 rhino platforms for sale in WA 2nd hand but they want too much, and because it will require drilling, cant be fudged, may have to wait for the Easter sales and see if they actually put the platforms on sale...because last time they advertised 15% off, but it was only for the fittings

If the ones you see are 150 specific platforms, then they will go straight onto the 120 without drilling holes. You just need to move the 3 crossbars to their right positions to suit your 120. If they are selling with the whole feet, leg, platform combo, then you only need to change the feet to suit the 120.

if you look at the installation instruction with the backbone system - it indicated it will fit at least the 2128 and 1928 length platform without additional drilling

I got the 2128 for my 120 with the feet style "aka not the backbone" if you find the platform cheap and want the feet style PM me at the time and I could sell my feet and buy the backbone mounting kit.

              cheers

What’s the benefit of backbone system, actual or otherwise, ?

Benefits are slightly lower and looks.
Cons are more weight, less you can carry on the roof; trying to reach under the planks from the side is blocked off; and much more effort to remove the rack for a 'clean' roof.

I have a backbone with pioneer platform. I love it. It has a higher dynamic and static payload capability compared to the cross rail alternative, meaning you can carry more on the platform. It's also great for roof top tents if that's what you are wanting to do. Only con I can think of is that it is difficult to clean the roof as the gap between the roof and platform is quite small. There are ways around this by using a low profile floor mop from bunnings. Agree with AMTS above about reaching under the planks from the side, however that's never been an issue for me really. In fact I find the holes in the backbone rail to be useful for tying things onto and grabbing the hook of ratchet straps, etc. IMO it is worth paying the extra to get the backbone system.

if one was to remove the factory roof rail and instal 3 cross bar directly on roof and have platform over (that is not on top of ) cross bars - would that not be very close to backbone system in terms of clearance?

I reckon it would be similar, if not lower. What cross bars would you be mounting directly to the roof?
FYI, the backbone system with the platform fitted sits just under the height of the factory roof rails. by just under, I mean millimeters.

I have my platform mounted on the legs ( I think RLCP from memory) that mount to the fixed roof mounting points. Happy with this method and I can get my hand under to pull that tie down strap through.

ok. I didn't know they could fit directly onto the roof mounting points.
