  • Very odd overheating issue 1KZ TE 2001 prado

Help me if you can this ones got me lost.
My 2001 1KZ TE DIESEL Prado suffered a cracked head a couple of years ago, it wasn't overheating but the obvious coolant in oil led to a head replacement.
Since the head was replaced (by qualified mechanics not Toyota) the following has since taken place.
ONLY WHEN OUTSIDE AIR TEMP IS ABOVE 30 degrees, at 100 kph HWY driving on any rise or hill the engine temp will rise rapidly and overheat also causing aircon to blow hot air. Occasionally also on the flat it will rise to 3/4.
If I reduce speed to 80 KMH temp will come down aircon will return to normal.
When in peak hour traffic stop start stop start constant idle with no air flow there is NO ISSUE AT ALL.
Radiator has been tested with infrared temp gun and gauge is correct the following is what steps have already been taken to sort this issue out SINCE THE HEAD HAS BEEN REPLACED.
NEW RADIATOR, RADIATOR HOSES, THERMOSTAT(S) X3, VISCOUS FAN, WATER PUMP, COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHES, LARGER THAN LATER MODEL CUT OUTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO BULLBAR TO INCREASE AIR FLOW, AIR OIL AND FUEL FILTERS REPLACED WITH REGULAR SERVICING.
I'm at a loss to understand what if anything has been missed or if there's an issue with the head or the reassembling on the head replacement or another factor.
It doesn't use or loose oil or coolant no leaks no drips no contamination no blocked condenser NO F@&$!NG IDEA.
HELP DESPRATELY NEEDED my summer dilemer is doing my head in again.
Any helpful advise appreciated THANK YOU, WOODSY..

Hi Woodsy, I'm in Ballarat so not a generally HOT area, however I have similar problems with my 1KZ when it is a hot day and I am on highway at 100 kph, the temperature gauge gets past 3/4.... I don't keep the AC on long enough to see if it is still functioning correct as i figure this is more strain on whatever is struggling... once i slow down to about 80 kph the temperature gauge settles down.

I visited a local radiator specialist recently and he reckons it is a dirty/ partially blocked radiator.

I am planning to put a new radiator in in the new year and am hoping this may resolve the problem for me, however this did not work for you

Keen to see if anyone else has had similar problems and/ or solutions.

If it was ok up until the head replacement then it would be reasonable to think that maybe something was not done right when the head was replaced, could be coincidence but...

As you have indicated you have changed everything else then it would seem the only logical thing to do is remove the head and check that they haven't used a wrong gasket etc.

Also as a matter of interest have you checked that the temperature gauge is working correctly?

Yes Leigh gauge is working correctly it's been verified using infrared heat gun. The head is coming off if no one in the forum can help me with a common denominator.

How much "stuff" is sitting in front of the grille, eg bullbar, lights, winch box, etc?

In my case I have the following:

Steel bar, winch box, round driving lights.

I do also have a snorkel.

Mechanic and radiator didn't seem to think that was enough on its own to cause overheating???

There is nothing in front of grill nothing on or below bull bar just a massive and I mean massive amount of airflow area with large cutouts in bullbar for extra airflow.
As I've said it's got me lost in summer I can drive for two and a half hours at 100kmh having issues with it overheating I then get into city traffic stoping and starting crawling along with no air flow and I don't have a problem.
The overheating issue should be happening the other way around.
                I also have a snorkel.

Genuine thermostats and waterpump? On another vehicle I had trouble once with a pressed steel waterpump, boiled on the first highway run, changed to a cast alloy impeller type and bingo! no further problems. Weird shite happens sometimes.

Yep genuine higher volume pump than the after market pump that was on it, l only changed it to eliminate it as a cause the old one was ok anyway

When your travelling at 100km/h your burning much more fuel to maintain that speed than idling in traffic.
Can you hear the viscous fan lock up at all when it starts to get hot? Have you tried to temp gun the inlet and outlets of the radiator when it's hot?

Since she's not using any coolant I can't see the need to pull the head.
The fact your aircon cuts out proves she is getting hot. Ecu will cut the aircon when the coolant temp sensor tells it she's too hot, irrespective of what the inaccurate dash temp gauge shows.
I'm interested to know what radiator you fitted as a bloke on the Mighty 90's Facebook is having all sorts of over heat problems and has done just as much as you have, again all to no avail. He has an alloy radiator which was coping perfectly. He's about to try a new viscous hub so we'll shortly see if that helps.
Factory core is a 3-row, but I see the el-cheapos are now using a single row of elongated tubes. Would be tons for a petrol but I'm unsure about a diesel.
Your symptoms are classic partially blocked core, as are the guy's on Facebook. His troubles only began when he gave her a flush and replaced the coolant with genuine Toyota. No mixing of coolants either, he did it all correctly.
Something I've only recently noticed is these KZ's have welsh plugs hidden behind the heat exchanger. So you could have coolant by-passing vital cooling passages via the corroded or popped out welsh plug shortcut.

Not sure if both net and outlet were checked I'm assuming the mechanics have as it's been back more times than I can count.
I have started my own process of ilimination which began with the water pump and viscous fan last week I am in the process of chasing another but larger radiator as another thing to cross off.
Then I think I'm at the point where the head will have to come off and check water galleries it just seems like a flow issue or something obviously simple that just isn't rearing its ugly head.
Is there some old gasket trapped somewhere that only causes a cooling issue in the hot summer days ?
Has some old gasket found its way Ito the new radiator and caused a blockage ?
Is there some kind of blockage in the block that has enough flow to keep up with the mother until hot summer days ?
Radiator fella tells me today classic symptoms of blocked radiator and that I've done every thing and more that he would have done.
Just doesn't add up having already replaced the radiator (only two row standard radiator) all common steps have been taken I'm determined to get this sorted gone to far to stop now.

Is it an auto or a manual and you've fitted an auto radiator?

                              Thanks carco
I'll check for welshplug tomorrow I was under the impression the standard radiator was two row / core I have the radiator fella chasing up a four row / core for me unfortunately it won't happen till the new year as his suppliers are having the usual Xmas new year break I've also been checking eBay for the same but none to suit waiting on replies.
