  • Under bonnet Air Compressor

    With thanks to Stan (LC120_man)

I started out browsing for ideas. My Prado is my new BIG KID's mechano set and I was looking for a project. I stumbled across this post http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=161 in the 4 sale section and - even though the post was a year old - Stan still had one bracket left (not any more :P )

I bought the Mega Grunt MX3 series compressor from TJM. It looks like a clone of the Viair and Max Air. It has the same specs but was half the price of the Max Air. Yeah - Cheapskate to the bone

I modified the carbon canister bracket .. flatten the locating pin and drill a new hole.

Fitted back into place ... and cleaned up the crap from last week's Mundaring trip

    Aaagghh -- that's better ..

    ... and refitted the cannister

... and then the bracket arrived ...

    It's beautiful.

    Thanks Stan.

IMHO - this forum is the best thing since sliced bread.

There's a heap more pics of the install - if anyone is interested - but for the sake of space I have kept it brief.

    Cheers

    Hi Chippy.
I put a box for our trailer power n that spot.
I was worried about the strut for the bonnet hitting it.
I put a bit of double sided tape on the box and closed the bonnet.
    It stuck to the strut.

    Be careful.

      Hi Jeff

      Good call.

When I did a dry run I was a bit concerned and did the same sort of test with a bit of blue tac on the filter - it doesn't touch but there must only be a hair's breadth in it.

      Cheers

          Top score Chippy, Well done.

I was just about to post a new topic asking how people went mounting their compressors under the bonnet in preparation for my upcoming ARB install.

This forum IS the duck's guts for sure, because of the people who share their experiences with everyone else.

          Keep up the great work,

          Drew.

            Nice work Chippy!

I would suggest to do a few small mods to the compressor itself...
Not sure how tight the air filter cup on your compressor but on the Max-Air one I had to glue 2 parts of the plastics together with a superglue to stop it coming apart on corrugations. Also the air filter itself in not screwed tight enough to stop dust entering through the tread, so putting some tape as used by plumbers on the water taps would stop that problem .

good stuff! looks like a great spot for it, iæve though about putting mine under the hood for a while now!

what are you doing with the air cables? going to mount them anywhere or just connect them when needed?

i canæt remember where i saw it but i came accross a rig that had cabled up the car so their was a point at the front and back to plug air tools into!

                  Hi McB

At the moment it is a case of plug the hose in as needed.

I've started another thread HEREfishing for ideas on how to add remote air lines - as I have no idea

Just installed my TJM air compressor. I didnt move the cannister as others have, the only thing I had to move was that electrical thingy..not even sure what it is as yet, but you can see it mounted above the compressor. Havent wired it in yet, but that wont take long anyway.!

Nice work Justo - very neat setup.

I like the way your mounting plate pops up the side and acts as a heat deflector.

Thanks mate.. 8) That was the idea, heat shield and hopefully stop some of the water and mud but not sure how well it will actually work...

Top work Justo - you've got me wondering how Macquarie are going to fit my ARB compressor when it finally arrives. That's a great idea with the shield.

How does it bolt down to the wheel arch?

                            Drew.

Your ARB comp will prob even fit in without needing to move anything, they are a lot smaller unit than mine. As for the fixing points I used the back bolt from the fuel filter bracket and reused the bolt from the "electrical thingy" I referred to. ops:
I then bent up another Aluminium bracket for the back end (not pictured) and bolted that through the guard and the back edge of the compressor tray. I will at a later point run a connector hose out somewhere in behind the bullbar and wire a switch in so I dont need to lift the bonnet everytime.
The longer term plan is to make up some side steps and use them as air tanks. 8) (not sure when I'll find time)
