  • Home made drawers under $110. Basic measurments added

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and have just made a set of draws for the back of our PRADO for the total cost of $110. I built ours out of MDF (figuring that they are in a sealed environment so won't be getting wet), the packing sheets cost nothing and the dearest items were the latches (which are the stainless "T" handle twist flush mount style and key lockable). It's all carpeted and looks like a bought job, so I'm stoked with the outcome. The only downside is that the slides are your typical Bunnings jobs until I can get some industrial runners.

They are anchored via the rear seat anchors, I simply removed the bracket and utilised the bolt holes. Too easy. The system is easily removeable as well....

    Parts:

2x latches bought from a caravan and camping store in Kalgoorlie $35 a piece. I'm sure you can get these cheaper, but there are'nt too many places that stock this sort of gear in Kal!

2x sheets 2400x1200, of 16mm MDF (could substitute with Marine Ply but costs will go up). See your local timber merchant as their packing sheets are usually worthless. Mine cost nothing.

1x sheet of 12mm 1200x600 MDF for the drawers. Cost nothing again!

1x box of 40mm wood screws.

1x box of 25mm wood screws.

    1x tin of carpet adhesive.

1x roll of grey marine carpet material.

2x pairs of draw runners 600mm long from Bunnings $20 total.

Alot of the above was gear I already had, such as the screws and the glue. I will also be upgrading the drawer runners at alater stage with items from CBC Bearings or an Industrial type supplier, however these will cost around the $100 mark for a pair???

When I get home next break I will measure up and see if I've got any more pics i can post up....

One thing that you can't see from the pics is the access holes on either side behind the 6th and 7th seat mounts. It is still usable space and i have cut some oval sections in the top to allow access. You can't see them as they were carpeted over and then the carpet was cut with a razor blade. They are basically an interferance fit and do the job nicely.

I've added some basic measurements below for anyone to reference from.

Looks good. Does it rattle when driven over corrugated surface.

      No rattles at all.......

      I was suprised myself!

Drove 600 + k's from Kalgoorlie to Perth and besides the faint smell of glue, you would'nt have even known that they were even there.... Also went off road a bit on the way back as well..... as per below..... on the way in to Karalee Dams.

As I said in the other thread Mitch, they are truly great. You are an inspiration.

A few years ago at work we were throwing out an old 19" rack that had some huge sliders in it. I remember thinking at the time, wow they are really good quality - I wish I had a use for them. (I didn't have the Toyota at the time). D'oh! Oh well, they went to the big junk yard in the sky.

Mitch, have you considered using roller bearings and aluminium box section for the runners? This might be cheaper and will probably be as good as the $100 runners. Let me know if I haven't explained it fully.

Hi Mitch, those draws look great!

In the pic of the open draw... they don't look all that deep. Do they go all the way to the back seats or have you got other storage behind there.

I was thinking of making some draws and leaving room for a 2nd battery compartment in between the draw and the back seat.
            Cheers, Leon

              Hi Drew,

I'm a bit of a horder too! I usually grab something for the sake of grabbing it in the hope that it would come in handy at some stage. You just reminded me of a cabinet i've got in the shed that has some decent metal runners in it and i may be able to utilise those?!

              Cheers for the good comments.

Yeah Snaga, the draws from memory are about 600mm deep and the cabinet sits flush against the back of the seats when they are in their reclined "comfortable" position. I tappered the front of the cabinet so that it looks neat more than for extra room, however it does allow for some more gear to be stored in the front of the cabinet up against the back seats. I was thinking of relocating the standard jack and tools to there and then maybe some recovery straps in the the other side?

So basically, with this set up, you can still get to the jack in the standard location if need be and you have four extra hidy holes. 2 at the front of the cabinet against the seats and 2 in the sides under the wings. I kept the height so that the wings were supported by the 6th, 7th and 8th seat latching bars, giving it extra strength on the sides.

                Cheers

Mitch, the draws look great & still grey without the Kalgoorlie red yet. Personally, I think they are a bit of overkill for a pair of shoes but they look good

                      Hey Mick,

Yeah mate, I still have access into the wings. I will take some more pics when I get home next week and show you how it's accesible. Quite simple, but almost invisable to the naked eye!

Inspired by recent threads on this topic, I have started building my own drawers.

Mitch, where did you get your roll of marine carpet from and what was the cost. I looked at the carpet at Bunnings but thought it was:

                          1. A bit too thick
                          2. A bit too expensive

                          Cheers - Byrnsie

                            Byrnsie,

The carpet is actually an automotive carpet (I think I said Marine above  ) and is from Upholstry Distributors in Kewdale, Perth.

They currently don't have any in stock, hence the reason why the iside of the draws and unseen areas are not yet covered.

Most trimmers should be able to get this for you.

OK, Time for some more detailed shots of the drawer system.... No measurements yet. I will get to that later.

                              Completed draws in raw form.

                              Draws open in raw form.

                              Left drawopen in raw form.

                              Initial fitup after carpeting.

Ceremonial opening of the draws after fitup.

Access holes to the side pods.

                              Right access hole.

                              Right access hole cover.

                              Left access hole.

                              Left access hole cover.

Can you see the left access hole?

Oh look, draws are open again.

                              Draw latch in open position.

                              Draw latch in closed position.

Closeup of left access hole opening, you can see the ledge that the cover sits on.

Same again, but you can see both ledges.

Front left side of the drawers. Due to the taper for the rear seats I left a small compartment on each side for extra crap...

                              Same again.

Left wing support, looking from rear seats to the back of the car.

                              Same again.

More info to come when I get more time....
