We have a 2008 Grande D4D with the smokey alloys. All 5 wheels are showing corrosion bubbles and it is getting worse. Worse still we only notified Toyota just AFTER our warranty expired so they told us bad luck. They say it may be because of the product we wash the car with. We just use a Turtle Wax car wash so I dont bu that. I dont see any similar threads so I am I just unlucky or is this a common issue for polished alloys.

We live in Coffs and are near the coast so we do get salt air. We keep the car clean and wash it when we can. We get an Endrust treatment every year on the vehicle so no problems there. I have had a few cars but never seen corrosion like this especially for a 3 year old vehicle.2008 Grande Silver Ash D4D

Mate, if you dont get any satisfaction fro Toyota you might want to sand that corrosion off, give it a coat of etching primer, paint and then clear, before it gets worse. I would only treat the areas effected and keep the repair as small as possible. If your close to the beach, after you've washed and dried them, you might also want to spray the wheels with a light coat of anti-static silicone. This will protect them and the wheel nuts very effectivly.

I spoke with someone in the Lismore/Casino area a while ago with the same problem... much worse though. Local dealer gave her the same lame blame game... "you haven't been taking sufficient care of your genuine Toyota alloy rims!"
Another Toyota brain fart... just fix it guys (Toyota) and not make a joke of what is a very good product over all.

Had the same problem. Live near Coffs but on a property & cross two creeks every day so thought this may have contributed. Fortunately I spotted before end of warranty and after pushing my case very hard Toyota replaced. New ones are 6 or 7 years old with no issues so far so definitely a quality issue.

My 03 Grande lived by the ocean for the first 8 years of its life until i just bought it and there is no corrosion whatsoever on the wheels.
Was parked outside for a lot of its life too and not kept particularly clean either.
Thats now all changed thoughMarc, 2003 Grande V6, Just a Bit of Stuff Done..........Work in progress.

I have an 06 d4d with the same problem. It goes to Fraser Is 2-3 times a year but we always wash them. I thought "alloy" wheels would not corrode. Does the impact on the wheel's integrity? or is it just an ugly sight. It looks like the corrosion is under paint. If I sand them back will you see the difference?

120 series Alloy Wheel Corrosion?
Hi All,
Has anyone experienced the paint bubbling on their alloys. My unused spare which has been under the hard wheel cover for 3.5 years of 4 years of ownership from new is the worst with one of the rims on the car showing it as well. Is it a warrantable item (I have Toyota extended warranty). The photos were taken from my phone so could be better but you should get the idea.

Whilst I do not have the same issue, I have some advice on the Toyota Extended Warranty.
It only covers 'lubricated parts'. At my last service, I was advised that the rear shocks are leaking and need replacing, I told them to go ahead as its covered by my extended warranty. Thats when I was told the above. Was I happy? Nope, not really..D4D Prado GXL - 2014. 2" OME lift, ARB Deluxe Winch bar, ARB under body protection plates, ARB EZ Deflator, Weaco fridge, Matsen fridge on slide, BFG A/T's, ARB CKMA12 compressor, Oztrail side awning with LED lights PLUS canvas extension, Lightforce XGT's.. Ive seen this on anodized and powder coated parts before.......
There is a chance with salty moist air coating these types of products around a join or crease area that it gets in...then over a period of time the aluminium underneath oxodizes....Alloy rust per say....or it can be that that part of the wheel was not prepped right at the coating phase...ultimatly...same result with two causes
Whats the forum think?
