  • DIY Suspension install ?

    Hi Guys

After some advice as most of you have done this yourself.

Will 2t jack stands and 1.7t trolley jack be suitable for the job?
Does anyone have the torque settings for all the nuts?

I've read the excellent step by step guides in this forum, but any other advice is appreciated.

That gear should do the job of getting the pointy ends off the ground.

As long as the jack stands are of a suitable rating. I have two 3000Kg stands but thats overkill as each stand is rated at 3000Kg. if they are rated to around 1500Kg you would be fine.

Torque settings for nuts and bolts = Rattle gun. As we were D.I.Y'ing i did not want any chance of the things coming loose.

So i would say a compressor and rattle gun is really handy.

Some decent quality spring compressors. 3 of them is preferable for safety.

Anti- seize is also handy to throw on threads as well.

Have someone to give a hand, pref not the missus... (no offence girls, but unless you are handy with this stuff its best your not around when your car is in bits and hubby is wandering around scratching his head cussing...:lol

The right size sockets and spanners. Some of those ratchet spanners are awesome to have for the struts and the top not on the rears but not necessary.

Allow yourself a day to do it, unless you have a workshop with plenty of room and your helper is a mechanic.

Do you need a wheel alignment at the end of it.

A wheel alignment is essential. I wound up having two. The first one straight away as the lift changed the angles significantly. I had the second one several weeks later, once things had settled a little, to make sure that it was spot on.

If you can hang out 'til Saturday I should have another photo essay for you .... courtesy of Fishnut. He's kindly allowed us to borrow his Prado so we can play with fitting a set of Billies and Lovells all round.

The Fishnut Flyer gets a bum lift, boob job and tummy tuck !!

Fishnut had sourced a set of Bilsteins and Lovells, Leachy had the driveway space ... compressor, rattle gun, patio, BBQ, Matty had the mechanical expertise and a you-beaut mechanic's tool kit, while the rest of us were there to lend a hand, drink, yak and take pics.

Start to finish the whole job took an hour and a half ... and we had to stop for a 20 minute drinks break otherwise the girls would have thought this stuff was all too easy .... and why do we need to get together for a whole day to do this kind of stuff.

We were thinking Fishnut should change his nik to Guinea Pig ..... but Crash Test Dummy sounds so much better.

The whole process went like a Ferrari F1 pit crew operation ....

                    Drive in.
                    Jack up the rear.
Two guys drop the jack stands in.
One guy rattles the wheels off.
Another guys wheels them out of the way.
Then one guy in each wheel arch ... top bolt off .... bottom bolt off ... shockie out .... little bit of weight on the diff ... spring out.

Little bit of weight on the diff .... spring in.

                    Repeat for other side.

Three or four pumps of each shockie .. just to prime them up.
Add the bottom washer, rubber and locating washer (its got a lip on it that locates in the top shockie mount).
Feed the shockie onto the bottom mount.
Bolt in ... just to locate.
As the shockie expands feed the top pin through the eye of the mount.
Rubber on, washer on, lock nut on.

As requested .... The Toyo manual torque settings are ... Here

Matty's shoulder has a built in set of clicks when the correct torque setting is reached ... just don't ask where the adjustor is

                    Wheels back on.

Stands out. Release jack. Jack out.

.... and on to the front.

Jack up the front. Wheels off. Jack stands in. Remove the jack ... it gets in the way.

Front bash plate off .... so you can get to the sway bar mounts.

This is when you find all the places that you didn't get a hose to after the last trip ops:

                    Sway bar off ..... completely.

Undo the steering arm castle nut.
With the nut still on ... tap it through and pop the ball joint knuckle off ... it gets in the way of removing and fitting the strut pack.

Undo the three nuts at the top of the strut. Undo the bottom bolt and remove the strut.

Spring compressors on .... remove the top shockie nut.

Easy job the separate the spring and the shock.
That top hat gets re-used with the new strut.

                    Spring compressors off.

Decide where you want the circlip to sit. We went with the middle slot.

                    Compress the new spring.
That bottom shockie seat goes on either way ... but there is only one right way .... ops: ... hey Leachy (not Leachy's fault ...... one of his was professionally installed arse about  ).
It is supposed to slide on so that it covers the circlip and acts as a retainer. The other way around it sits on top of the circlip with nothing to support the circlip at all. Bad !

Compressed spring slides on the strut and locates in the seat.
The top hat goes on .... rubber and new lock nut goes on.
Now ... line it up before you take the spring compressors off ... because you won't have a hope of spinning it around after the springs take hold. Have a look at how the three top bolts have to locate in the top mount .... and make sure the eye for the bottom bolt is facing the right way.

The whole assembly is ready to go back in.

                    Strut assembly goes here !

Really cool "West Coast Eagles" colours   ... not bad for a Dockers fan .. hey Fishnut

One good tip ... and one I'd never tought about ....

When you go to torque up the bottom shockie bolt, pop the jack under the lower arm and lift it until it is taking the vehicle's weight. The bottom bush is pressed / bonded in place. When the suspension moves it twists a bit and has to be able to move a little in either direction. If you torque that bottom bolt up .. at full droop ... you have just severely restricted the amount of movement that the bush will have .. in one direction (once the car is lowered back down onto its wheels). By compressing the suspension, then tightening up the bolt, you are maximising the amout of movement that it can have and prolonging the life of the bush.

                    Repeat for other side.

As requested .... Toyo torque settings are ... Here

Once again .. we made use of Matty's adjustable torque shoulder 8)

Sway bar, steering and bash plate back on.
Check torque settings on all bolts
                    Wheels on.
                    Jack up.
                    Stands out.
                    Release jack and remove

Its about now that the pit crew chief starts slapping his hand on the roof yelling GO, GO, GO !!! "Great pitstop guys !"

Time to see how this new suspension measures up.

Then there's all the sweeping Mundaring dirt off Leachy's driveway. ops: ops: ops:

Fishnut heads out for a few burnouts ... we couldn't get the smile off his face

                    Its test drive time.

Its about now that Fishnut should be picking his rig up after its wheel alignment. It is essential .. if you value your tyres. Its also possible that you'll need another alignment in a few weeks when everything settles in.

So that was it. All done and dusted.

..... and since we had finished nice and early it meant more time to eat, drink and spin yarns

Fantastic evening ! Thanks Fishnut ... for buying stuff for your Prado and volunteering to be a Crash Test Dummy .... , thanks Leachy .. for letting people come to your house, use your tools, sweep your driveway, cook you dinner and do your dishes    ... and special thanks to Matt for his mechanical guru-ness, awesome bank of mechanical knowledge and some really cool tools to make me jealous.

                    Cheers

When I did my own suspension install ... with far fewer helping hands ... I disconnected the panhard and the sway bar ends .... which gave me a lot more room to move.

Last night ... with the extra helping hands .... it wasn't necessary.

Awesome company and we get to do it all again next weekend! Also, thanks Leachy for the rattle gun and compressor, not sure about actually using spanners! Anyway, again, great bunch of people I'd do anything for!
