  • what about having a snorkel fitted on the petrol
Does that make the fuel consumption better
More air in to the engine
And what would be the best octane to run in a 2006 4litre
91 or 98 I think that's the only levels we have
Been out of touch with the petrol after running diesels
    For many years

    • I have a 03 with lift, bullbar, ARB rack and LPG. Just did a trip to Yeppoon from Brisbane and took a few scenarios loaded up with gear and 4 humans.
      Highway 350km 16.1 litres LPG
      Beach/town 288km 17.1 litres 98 petrol
      Highway 402km 13.7 litres 98 petrol

      • My Prado grande 03 with some mods(lift, bull bar, mud tyres, roof rack, UHF radio). Get average 17-18L/100km with 2 adults and 3 kids plus some kids stuff at the back. Always enjoy the driving than keep watching the gauge. Expected this figure as its V6 and 4L engines. I couldn't imagine if the engineers put smaller engine to pull this#tough body, may be I will complain about performance..

        Cheers, Sam..

        • They run well on either but mine seems better and smoother on 98 but the fuel consumption is about the same on both. If 98 is on sale I use that . I don't think that the snorkel made any difference to either consumption or performance- it just gets the air intake up into cleaner air and away from water [ which I avoid like the plague.]

          • I have jsut got though my first 100L in my mew 2008 prado.. and am getting 25L/KM (city) based on my rouch calcs & torque OBD. It has a 2" lift, bullbar and a rhino rack alloy cage.. is that too high.. i was expecting 15-18L but reading through this thread it makes me think that something is wrong. Wheat i know to check is O2 sensors (which one??) and the air intake. Is there anything I might be missing??

On a possibly unrelated note, I am getting a fail in Misfire counts for last/current driving cycles(calculated) but each cylinder is ok.. here are my logs if anyone is interested.

            • Seems excessive to me, I have 2 inch lift, A/T's, do heaps of stop start around town and sit around the 17/18 and I don't baby it. 25's I would expect with 2 tonne behind you... Cheers Steve

              • Same. I have lift, 265/70's bar, winch etc. I average 14-15 in town. 12-14 hwy, and 17-21 towing a Racecar on trailer (1.8+ tonne).

                • Filled up 177L today after 1174km = 15.1L/100km
Fuel warning light came on at 1085km.
                  DTE hit 0km at 1139km.

Won't be attempting this feat again, that's for sure.

Funny, I always thought you had a Diesel for some reason.

Yeah I've done something similar to that before, not a good feeling when you are sitting at lights just waiting for it to splutter.....

                    • Having said that though Andrew, I actually ran it to total empty - had a 10l in the boot.
It went about 140k past 0 on the DTE.
Still, I was trying to keep out of town as much as possible in the last hundred K's.....lol

I have no idea, just an assumption I guess.

.....and you know what they say about assumptions....

                            • I'll add my long term average.... 15.5 over 195K, which has included about 35K towing windup camper. General use is suburban commuting with the occasional country run.

                              • Hi Darren. I have a 2016 V6, 4 litre Prado Kakadu and the fuel consumption is pretty grim. I can get about 12.5 l/100k on the open road but it often gets above 15 in the city. Once you factor in 4x4 stuff then you are looking at more than 18. However, having said that, I bought the petrol V6 on purpose as I wanted the smoothness and overtaking power of the petrol engine which is fabulous. I would never trade what I have for the diesel engine for many reasons but this suits my circumstances as I lease my cars so save 0.48 cents in the dollar tax + GST on fuel so it is far cheaper for me. If you watch the fuel costs then you can often buy large quantities of cheap unleaded, whereas in the West, diesel does not vary in price much. I think it appears you will be paying more for petrol in the short term but the servicing and repair costs are cheaper in the long run. If you are buying a second hand Prado, then you may need to consider these extra maintenance costs as a few extra dollars a week in fuel is often easier to bare than a $10,000 engine upgrade!!!!! Drive the two versions side by side and buy what you prefer. I did this and the petrol motor won hands down for power, smoothness and quietness (but I do recognise the advantages of buying diesel as well).
