This talk of alternators failing around 100,000klms has got me interested. I've noticed this winter when I drive in stop start traffic in the CBD with the lights on, I can hear the Surepower VSR kicking in and out a lot more. I should measure the V at the time to see what is going on. Maybe the output V of the alt is down...

Will the alternator charge my second battery with a dual battery set-up???

D4D,
That's interesting mine sits around its normal charge voltage with just the headlights
on and the auxiliaries fully charged. Yours must be dropping quite a lot to drop out the VSR either that or the VSR is
set very high?HKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others

Hi all, in relation to the dual battery set up, is it all 150 series Prado's that have the problem charging the second battery. I have been told, it was only after a certain year when they changed the alternators. I spoke with my local Toyo deal and that had no idea at all. Even their chief mechanic said he had no way of know as both the old alternators and the new "smart" alternators look the same. I have a Dec2010 150 series and thinking of getting the dual battery set up.
Thanks

Hi tactical, being a 2010 you'll be able to install one of LeighW's booster diodes and enjoy the simplicity of a dual batt set-up without the need for a DC Charger.
Send LeighW an email on here or check out https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alternat...AAAOSwsN9XC0gu
You'll then only need a battery, tray and isolator of your choice and some cable/lugs etc...
I use a SCI80 from Traxide (Drivesafe on here) which is a little different to most traditional isolators, but the likes of Redarc and Narva and several others also do a pretty good job if it.Cheers
Micheal.

Hi Guys, I had the diode thing fitted and it boosted charge to 14.3v. It worked for well over a year. Right now, I’m sitting in a caravan park in NSW with a dead alternator. The diode broke in half when I pulled it out. Thankfully, I kept the original 7.5amp fuse. The Lubemobile Mechanic reckons the standard alternator doesn’t have the balls to charge a second battery and camper battery. He’s off now getting a new one, (dreading the cost).
I changed to an SBI 12v 200 amp solenoid too. I’m no sparky but my gut tells me a 130amp alternator won’t be a bad idea. I’ll let you know how it pans out if you like!
Cheers

Dangerduck - Out of interest, which diode did you have?
You may have just broken it pulling it out as I'd doubt it would get damaged in-situ.
p.s alternators can and do die, blaming the charging of multiple batteries is a stretch though - think of how many thousands of Toyo's are running 2 or 3 batts for years on end without problems.
Let us know what you find.Cheers
Micheal.

G'day, I can't remember what it was. A mate of mine bought one for me when he got his. It went into the Alt 2 fuse slot (replacing the 7.5 amp fuse). Post script to my story above was, the alternator was chock full of dust 'n dirt. When the mechanic showed me it, the clutch was jammed and the rotor shaft wouldn't turn. I had a 130 amp OEX alternator installed for $800.
I'm now running 14.1 on both starter and second batteries with the original 7.5 amp fuse in Alt 2.
When I got home, I blasted the dead alternator out with compressed air, the amount of crap that came out was incredible. After this, she turned with no problem and the clutch pulley worked again.
So I suppose the story here is, I use my 150GX as a 4wd. Running in dusty environments i.e. in convoy, check your alternator from time to time. Giving it a blow out might just save someone $800!

Hey guys,
Was told by an auto elec that I needed a DC to DC charger because the alternator switches itself on and off or something so won't charge my 2nd battery properly? Is that true or is he trying to sell me a dc to dc charger...
Or will one of the voltage boosters work for fine in mine? Build date May 2012 if that makes a difference

Hi Rob, the best thing you can do is fit one of LeighW's Voltage boosters and then you will not only be able to quickly charge your auxiliary battery properly but your cranking battery will be maintained in a higher state of charge as well.
Don't hold it against the auto elec for trying to sell you a DC/DC device, most of them have no idea how new alternators work, and have been brainwashed by all the deliberately misleading advertising used to sell DC/DC devices.

You can use a booster in all Prado's up to but not including the new 2.8ltr model.HKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others
