  • Can anyone recommend a Roof Mounted DVD player?

As per the title, has anyone installed one of these and if so where/what/how much etc? It's supposed to keep the little ones at the back nice and quiet when daddy enjoys 4wding ohhh and wireless headphones would be nice

also built in dvd player is a must, don't want two seperate units

    Hi,
Have you considered the headrest option?
Have a look at these as an example... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Headrest-...item3a6790c6dc
Just so happens these are Matts from dig_options. PP discount maybe???
Our 6 year old and 3 year old try their hardest to make sure there is no time or money for the other baby

i did think about head rest monitors, however one thing that draws me away from it is the seperate dvd unit sitting somewhere else...with the roof mounted unit dvd is integrated and all i need to run is the power cable and audio output to my stereo (only if i want to hear kids stuff via the main speakers instead of their wireless headphones). Headrest idea is great but looks like lots of wires+messy however I'm happy to be proved wrong

On some headrest ones the screen comes forward, and dvd slots in behind.
I have a cheapie roof mount unit, AVX brand or something. It works ok, but the rca input played up, once i fix them i will have the front screen linked to the roof mount unit.

I've always wondered how roof mounted DVD screens are mounted. It looks like you just have the lining to screw into and if you wanted a nut and bolt assembly, you need access to the other side of the lining. You then have to run at least the audio cables down to the headunit to get sound through the car speakers. Sounds like hard work but please educate me as I am looking at just the LCD headrest monitors without DVD players as I have a HDD media player which can take 500 movies vs carrying 500 DVDs around in the car.

MY roof mount is fixed to almost like a metal bracket (from memory), all the cables run across to passenger side down the channel behind seatbelt,
replaced the interior light. I assume you could use that existing cable as a snake - attach your wires to it and pull through?
Mine has cordless headphones, and can also use a radio frequency that can be tuned into.
            It was already fitted though.

Just to put my 2 cents in also, there are no visible cables with the headrest DVD players. Cables go down insde the seats and through into the centre console where a pwr feed can be sourced. The headsrest these days can be set up as master/master, Master/slave or slave/slave (run off a head unit on the dash...) audio can be either wireless, wired, or via fm radio for all to hear (nothing like a family sing along to the wiggles!) Most headrests will have a USB or SD card slot (probably same as the roof mounted types also), so multiple AVI files can be loaded onto 32GB memory storage devices so your not having to carry a wad of DVD's. Also, the beauty of having 2 x screens is that if you do have 2 kids in the back, each headrest can play their own movie/ game to alleviate any fistycuffs....
I have also heard from a collegue that the Roof mounted screens tend to shake alot when travelling over the bumpy bits which make for awkward viewing.... This is probably the deciding factor for going with the headsets in my case. Sorry to make the decision any harder, good luck in your choice which ever way you go......

Doesn't everything shake when travelling over bumpy bits?!

Seriously though Craig, thanks for the good explanation as I was also thinking out the headrests to give each tin-lid the choice of viewing as was wondering about the master vs slave options...

I agree with everything that Craig has said here. I fitted a set of headrests the same as in the eBay link above 2x nights ago and they are brilliant. We already had an indash DVD and a roof mount. They are all linked together now by using a couple of RCA splitters. We can run all four screens off the main or the kids can have their own movies/games seperately in the rear whilst we listen to the radio in the front. The wireless earphones are a great idea also.

                  Here is a pic..

Be careful if you look at installing a roof mount as you could damaged the roof whilst screwing it on. The roof structure will pull on the sheet metal if you're not careful...

Here is my roof mount DVD player which I installed in 2006. Its 15.4" 16:9 res: 1024 x 800wide screen. I have 2004 Grande. Its a Chinese brand, but have been good for me till now. So no complains. I'm now planning to hook up media player to it.

Anyone thought of Ipad/s, sink them from your computer put shows music games what ever on them and a head rest mount that clips onto the legs of the head rest. Goes in any vehicle and child can then take it into the tent/hotel room/park where ever you stop if need be. And if for some reason you sell your Prado.. pfftt why ?? but well you know if you need to you can put them in the next vehicle no worries.

I thought of head rest mounts and a in car DVD player but the Ipad came up as the better option for every thing, and even we can use it for maps or cruising the net at night. My son loves it he watches the wiggles and other kids TV shows keeps him happy and as he gets old we can give him head phones, his car seat even has built in speakers so if we want to we can play his tv show through them and they are like surround sound for him.

                        Try www.elinz.com.au

I bought the 9" dvd headrests, and they are brilliant, great discplay, veryclear and come with infra red headsets.

The best thing is that you can have 2 different movies playing at once.......
