  • DIY Cargo Drawers

    Hi all

I have decided to start a new thread instead of expanding on Mumsrig's thread, noteing it is now getting way large.

So first this first, her are the plans that I drew up and then sort of followed,
they come in three sheets, first ones got the plans and the following two show how all the bits fit on to three 2400x1200mm ply. I have used 9 mm ply for mine, however the plans were drawn up using 12mm ply.

Now for the next set. Carpet has yet to be brought/fitted

I had to make two layers of 9mm ply for the top, one layer was just too weak to hold any weight.

If any one is interested in the plans in VISIO format, PM me, and I will send them to you.

I would like to thank Mumsrig and Chippy for the insperation in doing this, with out their pictures on the forum, the other halve would never have agreed to give this a try, the best bit is I have also convinced her to do a 2inch lift, but that is realy to fit the Cooper ST's she has picked out.

I will post more pics once the carpet has been done, hopefully before we go camping at the end of the week.

            Good one Len.

Can you please reduce the first round of pics to 800 pixels wide, or use the link attchemnt as shown in the posting pics thread to make them full size when clicked.

            Cheers,

                OK All

The Draws are almost finished, just fixing up some of the carpet and fittings.

Once finished I will post more pics.

Must say though, not bad for a first attempt, and having no carpentry skills

                  Here are some more pics.

Found out today that I made the draws the wrong size, IE too long. Funny how you find out someone is a carpenter by trade after you build something. The bloke in question built these draws many years ago for other cars, so now the plans are slightly wrong.

The draws should only be 600mm in depth, 700mm if you can get HD runners to fit...(UES in perth has them, 45-100kg 700mm long, $36 a pair)
and the back board now needs to be moved forward to match.

The advantage with this is the extra space behind the seats can now hold my recover gear bag and compressor/hoses on one side and oils/lubs and other liquid type stuff on the other (in a purpose built box I think.)

Left hand draw worked realy well, and then I put the right one on upside down, note the gap at the top. what happens at the end of the day and the wife wants to go out. when it stops raining, i think i will fix it.

Left hand side hidey hole/ jack stowage. May have to move the jack, not the easiest place to get into.

                  Right hand side stowage.

Both side front stowages are accessable from behind the seats, not much room, but good for stowing ropes and small tarps in.

I will post more when I have finished it......if I ever finish it. Every time I use it, I want to make changes to make it better.

And now to get a fridge slide.

Well Draws are now finished, except for the fridge slide.

Using the tie down points that I removed from the back for the fridge securing points.

As you can see, the draws hold a fare amount of stuff in them. Right side for tools and left side for spares, although at the moment it is empty

Behind the seat recess. Perfect for the recovery kit, tarps, ropes and compressor.

All up I think it cost about $250 to make and a couple of weekends. Had to modify the system twice due to changes we wanted to make. The draws are now 650mm long, and the backing plate was moved closer to the draw ends. Behind the seats is roughly 300mm of room.

At the end of the day, not too bad for some one who can not cut a straight line with a circlar saw with guide attached (and yes I did manage to cut one of the boards crooked.)

Hope you all have fun making your own, I know I did.

                      Very nicely done Len.

... and isn't it a great feeling ... putting together a set of drawers for $250 knowing a name brand can retail for around $2500

                      Cheers

Not wanting to sound negative/critical, but all these wooden drawer systems makes me wonder how they will go when the going gets tough? Some of them look a little light weight to me.

I presume someone has taken a wooden system on some dinkum corrugations? Presumably most will survive OK, but I'm sure some unfortunate individual will come unstuck (literally) eventually. That would be a real pain in the ar$e having your draws fall apart out in the sticks.

Mine are made out of steel tubing and pressed sheeting and I wouldnt be with out them.

what's going on with the right hand draw handle.
                          it's not centred.
it's a nice job. and you have a good colour match.
very snazy. and for the cost and the fun you had,
                          it's a winner.

Well, I've had mine in for a good while now and MUMSRIG has been a few places... I pulled them out a couple of weeks ago (due to some visitors and needing the extra seats) and was surprised to find how well they are hanging together. No repairs were necessary... Even the elcheapo Bunnings runners are holding in there, although I will be upgrading them shortly.

                            Mitch

                            P.S. Nice Job Len....

                              Draws

                              Thanks Mitch

Well, my draws seem to be holding up nicely, has stuck some realy heavy gear ontop, no buckeling or breaks, no damage so far from rough tracks . handels make some noise but then they are cheap  .
