you definently wont get HF and UHF in one unit, HF uses 3-30Mhz at 100watts and UHF 477Mhz at legal max of 5watts, one radio just can not work that far apart. The uniden unit sold a while ago 27Mhz CB and UHF was actually to two radios in one case, you can only use one at a time and still needed to install two ariels.

The choice of HF or Sat phone will be personal, do a bit of reserch on the net, check out the VKS737 web site, thats the 4wd network for the HF and has lots of info.

I am actuly looking for a HF set at the moment as I hope to do a bit of traveling atleast once a year and it should last longer than a sat phone.

I think everyone here who has not got a VHF or HF radio (im assuming they are the same?)would want to know the best way to go.
I know I do.
I will most probly hire a sat phone next march when we will be going through the middle but I wonder if we will miss out on all the 4WD chit chat that I assume you would get with a VHF.
We will be going from Perth to Sydney for a wedding early March next year crossing via the nullaBORE west to east. And depending on the weather near the end of March we will cross the simpson from east to west, Go past Ularu and drop down to Kalgoorlie, back to perth.
There is a definate need for the safety of either Sat phone or VHF but the VHF head units are so big. I had enough trouble finding the spot to hide a Uniden UHF013.
I either plan to organize an old loaner VHF to store next to the fridge in the back just in case. Or hire a sat phone.??????
For those of you that have, or have had a VHF I ask you, Do you hear and join in much chatter on the VHF in the outback?

I don't have one, but from what I have heard you have issues using a HF while moving. Don't know about many using VHF.

Most 4wd convoys seem to use UHF which is good for a reasonable distance in the open.

Anyone with HF here care to offer their experience.

Another option you should consider is a personal EPIRB. They only cost about $300 and IMHO are essential when travelling outback.

Does anyone know if there is a UHF radio on the market that have HF features?

I had a look at Codan but it made no mention of UHF usage.

I am planning on a trip to simpson and it is recommended that a sat phone is a life saving option.

I was wondering if I could combine a HF and UHF radio, it might be cheaper.

Please advise.

There are HF/VHF/UHF sets on the market, starting about $1200.

However you are expected to have a licence for operation on those bands, and some tuning may be advantageous if you are considering the CB bands.
