Hi all, my latest Accessory is a set of Maxtrax. Just trying to find a spot outside the car to mount them? 1st i was thinking to incorporate them in my soon to be made shovel and axe spare wheel holder. Then looked towards the roof... I don't have a roof rack just the standard roof rails and the trax fit across them nicely. Is there a way of securing them to the rails? locking them there would be better? Sorry for the long post....

Hi bushbasher, i don't own roof racks. Don't really need them yet. I'm trying to securer them to my standard roof rails for minimal cost...any ideas?

If anyone has had cause to use their maxtrax in gooey mud conditions you'll find there is a problem when you want to pack them away after your recovery. I ended up with about 10 kilos of mud stuck to each trax and it was almost impossible to scrape it all off. I got back home and hit them with the karcher and it took a lot of effort to clean them up.

My point is that when you consider how to carry these things then also think about where to stow them if they are loaded up with mud. I stick mine on the roof rack with tie-downs.

I'm wondering if giving them a coat of silicon spray might help to allow the goo to slide off easier, but then the tyres might spin more and stuff up the recovery?

Ideas?

Tried the eye bolts from supercheap but they were to big to slide in the rails.

Can you elaborate? Did you get normal eyebolts or lifting eyebolts (the one with a flange)? What were you sliding into the rails?

Sorry, they were the proper roof rack eye bots with the spring and square slide thread thingy Supercheap only stock one size, which fits a brand of roof rack but to big to slid along standard prado roof rails.

Thanks, i did find them and was woundering what size they are. I'll checkout out Supercheap in Bilo 1st, then try RhinoRack 2nd. Only 1.5hours from bigger towns of Gladstone or Rockhampton. Rocky has ARB, TJM and Bunnings Thanks again

I can get fairly good prices for fasteners from Coventry and/or United Fasteners and Roof Rack city in Adelaide seems to be pretty good hunting ground for me pricewise. Let me know if I can help if where you are is pretty remote. I'll go shopping and post the stuff up to you.

not sure if they can slip into the slots in the roof rail but ring RhinoRack HQ in Sydney as the guys who answer the phone are happy to go and measure one up.
I've still got my roof rails hanging in the garage after I replaced them. So I can take some measurements too.

I see that you have fixed the link. Looks like a good idea to have lockable straps to prevent the maxtrax being stolen. However, I'd dare say that the 4WD fraternity who do recognise the maxtrax on your roof would hold themselves with high regard and resist stealing them.

Normal cambuckle straps would do if you are not straying far away from your vehicle.

I actually found that I could cable tie the maxtrax to the grab handles above the 3rd row when I'm a long drive. I used releasable cable ties which are green in colour and can be found in the irrigation section at Bunnings.

All great ideas, thanks for all your help. Might try the Four 8mm eye bolts and lockable straps as it may be better to store them outside car when covered in mud, sand etc. I didn't even know the roof rails had slots in em for eye bolts ops: I'll check out what supercrap have in store tomorrow, i mean today :shock: And i'll be sure to check out the green reusable zip ties next time i'm in the Big smoke. I seem to make it to Bunnings every trip :lol: :lol:

My post took ages as well.
I couldn't really see anything useful in the link you provided.

Hopefully,the gap between the roof rails matches up with the handles. I know that the 4 holes at the corners are going to be too far outside of the roof rails.

I'll check out your idea now. Seems a waste of money buying roof racks when the maxtrax just fit across the rails perfectly, just need a way to secure them to the rails.

I just found these. Does anyone own a pair and would they work with the trax? thread them through a handle or something? any other options out there?

Klanny,

You might be able to fix some angle brackets (longer than the width of the Maxtrax) to the inside on the roof rails by using M8 channel nuts from RhinoRack or a Unistrut dealer. See pics in the thread below.

Then you will need a way to strap/bolt the Maxtrax to the angle bracket.

Alternatively, get 4x eyebolts and bolt them directly to the inside of the roof rails. Then you won't need to make up the angle bracket.
