Not sure if Blackwoods has the stainless version according to this listing
    http://www2.blackwoods.com.au/infoBA...3399&P=2024269

As for mounting it on its side next to the basket, 3mm thick will do and weld a nut to the other side. Or if you want to tap into it, at least 5mm thick material to get 3 threads on.

Just be wary about mounting the Maxtrax on the side because once you take all 4 star knobs off, it will fall on you. In your case, you might be better off with the female version. Then get a stainless screw and let it act like a stud on the flat bar and drill a hole in it for the padlock.

    • Gotta love CAD... I dont have CAD (or the talent!!!!) and it certainly didnt take me 2 minutes to knock up either. This is what I was originally going to get try and get a mate to make to mount my MaxTrax to my sportz bars... (made up with some visio shapes and "not to scale as yet") As you have suggested, change the Wingnuts for the female version of the Star Knobs...

I can confirm that there are still a few sets at Supercheap in Adelaide at $249. Couldn't resist the price so bought a set today. Unfortunately it took them 10-15 minutes to locate the stock out the back and that cost me another $80.
        Damm I hate that shop!

        • Good work with Visio there, Craig. Are you mounted the angled bracket to the roof bars? If so, they would be at the wrong centre distance to match the Maxtrax.

          • It was my intention to mount the angle brackets on the front and rear crossbars (not the roof rails) so the maxtrax would rum the length of the car (not across the roof like your design) this means that the maxtrax can be removed from the roof from one side only.

            • So you have crossbars mounted on the factory roof rails? That would work as long as the cross bars are 890mm between centres as that is the centre distance of the holes in the Maxtrax according to their webpage. http://www.maxtrax.com.au/index.php?page=mtxmps

Otherwise, if the crossbars are mounted directly to the roof, then their centre distance is 852mm. So just make the bracket with the holes in the appropriate position.

The only thing I can think of now is whether the star knob will interfere with the Maxtrax and stop the star knob from turning....

Another thing: there are no security measures to stop someone removing the screws attaching the bracket to your crossbars and nicking off with your Maxtrax.

              • Good call on the Star Knob interferring with the maxtrax. The M10 Knob with a 50mm Dia top will interfere (just). I'll look around for a knob with a diameter less than 48mm or for around $27 I could always get the Maxtrax Mounting Pin set. The maxtrax site does state however that these must be mounted vertically for the Maxtrax to be carried horizontally?. Thoughts on that???
Alternatively, here is another option that I have seen on my-swag which cound be the go... Just then need to padlock it all when required.

                • Craig,
Looks Good. If you did want to get the maxtrax mounting pin set you would have to modify the holes in your maxtrax as the maxtrax pictured in your post above are the older style.
                  Cheers

                  • If the length of the 'neck' of the star knob was long enough, it could clear the side wall of the Maxtrax.

Thanks Jason. I have got the Latest version with the keyed mounting holes to suit the new pins

yeh I made a cardboard cutout from the dimensions of the star knob you provided, to check after you highlighted the interference to me and as you say, if the neck was 10mm longer it'd be ok. theres probably a couple of other versions of the same thing out there. It's just a matter of searching around... the Star knob as it is would probably go on but the stress of it forced against the side of the maxtrax would lead to the plastic knob disloding from the bolt that it incases over time.

                        • There are smaller versions but maybe not enough grip

                          • amts you're a wealth of information......If only my customers would respond the same!!!

I like the Stainless option in either M10 (36mm knob) or even the M12(40mm knob). The width of the Neck is wider too which would be better. I dont think grip will be an issue and I think once tightened, the small amount of flex from the pressure of the knob to hold the maxtrax in place should prevent the knob from vibrating loose. Were these from your concept fasteners catalogue?

                            • Yes, they are from Concept Fasteners.
They haven't responded to my email though Time for a call.

The Maxtrax mtg kit specifies M10 fasteners. I haven't measured the holes on my Maxtrax (previous version). Are they closer to 10mm or 12mm? Using an M12 would give more meat to drill the hole for the padlock

                              • The widest part of the keyed hole has a diameter of approx 16-18mm (have to actually measure tonight), as when I was using my cardboard template of the star knob, i noticed how close the diameter of it was to the size of the hole.
