Sovereign winch cradle capacity

Hi Guys,
have attached a genuine winch cradle to my sovereign bullbar (2004 VX petrol). I don't have any specs on the cradles capacity. I read somewhere on the internet it is rated for a 9500 pounds winch. This is a bit vague. I have a tigerz11 grande winch 12,000lbs so I need to know if the specs are 9500lbs (thought they would quote in Kgs?) and if I can install the Tigerz with confidence.

Pretty sure the bullbar is suited for a winch the size of a 9500LB warne winch (I know my ARB bar is). The thing to remember with winches is that they'll only pull that "maximum" load on the very last run of the drum- As soon as you've got more layers of rope on the drum the pulling weight is drastically reduced- Basically as long as you keep more than 1 layer of rope on the winch you'll never exceed that maximum loading. You've got to remember as well that the prado is a 2.3 ish tonne car- If you're putting 12,000lbs (or 6 tonne) of load on that winch to move the car then you're probably pretty bloody stuck and need to be looking at shovelling/ thinking carefully about what you're doing.

Thanks for getting back to me. OK sounds like it is 9500lbs.

I always get confused comparing pounds to Tons and Tonnes (UK, USA short etc). I was also surprised that add-ons manufactured by/for Toyota are in lbs instead of KG's (I assumed Japan are on the Metric system?).
I don't expect to use a winch unless all other options are exhausted (more likely to help someone else get out of strife). I guess I also have the option of using a pulley to halve to load on the cradle (two edged sword)?
Good point about the number of layers, as I have dyneema which is thicker on the winch than steel cable I guess that will magnify the effect on the pulling power. I'll see if I can find some stats on it.

Can anyone confirm if the specs say
1. only max 9500lb winch to be fitted, or
2. max 9500lbs pulling limit?
If the specs say max 9500lb winch to be fitted, does this mean a potential winching limit of the cradle of 19000lbs (in the event of using a a pulley)?

Apologies for asking stupid questions, but just trying to confirm the capability of the the winch cradle and havn't been able to acquire the cradle documentation.

For anyone interested I found some sample stats for the pull for each layer on a 12,000lb winch using 9mil Rope.

Hey EddieF where did you get the winch cradle from is it new or secondhand , people say they don,t make them for the Sovereign bar anymore, cheers

Winch cradle is available through Toyota. I have heard the same rumour, but they are available. Got it added when I got the Bar brackets upgraded to the post recall ones while the bar was off the car.
I think there may be two difference cradle codes, one for pre recall and one for post recall. Perhaps the pre recall is the one no longer available? Give the Toyota parts section a call, they will be able to clarify in a few minutes.
