  • Bullbar recommendation

Starting to use the car more for bush camping (has a roof top tent) and had a near miss with some wildlife recently so time to get a bullbar fitted. I don't have any really useful knowledge in this area so looking for advice. I'm not a serious or hugely competent 4wd driver so looking for something that will offer protection from wildlife and the odd knock and scrape when heading for off road campsites. Probably won't be going down the path of a winch etc but would possibly add some extra lights at some stage. Steel or aluminium? Any particular brand/supplier recommendations? Thanks in advance! From my (limited) knowledge, aluminium bars like Toyota's Sovereign can be fitted without necessitating a spring upgrade as they're not too heavy. Downsides are less strength and a limited winch rating (9500 lbs I think, compared to 12000 lbs for steel). When I looked at bars, I checked out ARB, TJM and Ironman. All were almost identical. I went with Ironman as they were $600 cheaper than the others (I haggled for a show discount but RRP was still a lot less). Build quality is really good with nice welds. The only thing that looks a bit agricultural is the bolts at the lower part of the bar. I thought about replacing these with domed allen bolts but figured if they get bashed, the supplied bolts would be easier to remove.

Thanks for the info Hector_the _dog...looking at the Ironman range now. Did you go for the steel or aluminium version? Did you get them to fit it too?

I went with the steel deluxe bar and had my suspension done at the same time (heavy springs at the front due to the weight of the bar. They fitted it all in the one day. They also did a check 500 kms later to ensure all bolts were tight and suspension heights were good. They were the only company who took the time to talk through things. ARB just handed me a quote and TJM seemed completely disinterested in the work!

I recently got the TJM Outback Bullbar for my 2018 Kakadu with black steel, i like the look of it and is going great so far, cost about $2800 and is winch compatible, they also have a cheaper one without winch
