Genuine steering wheel audio controls on pre 2007 120 Prados

For anyone that is interested I recently fitted a later model steering wheel with audio controls to my 2006 120. I researched at great length and finally got the controls working. The clock spring is the same throughout and the steering wheel cruise and audio wires plug straight in. There is no wiring however after the clock spring to the back of the stereo. I am including links that will show how to connect the wires to the clock spring plug. A PC CD cable will connect right up if you remove the pins and install them in the Toyota plug. I have an Android double din head unit and it works great with the steering wheel controls. My factory stereo had the socket for steering wheel controls so you could enable that with the later steering wheel also.

Ive got the wheel with buttons, plugged into the clockspring, tried working out what buttons did what to make up my own harness back to the head unit (it has the ability to map steering controls), but no luck with the pin out, or illumination input also.

I also have a fully populated short harness/connector that plugs into the car side of the clock spring. Its short and needs wring in accordingly.

Im in the same boat as you. 2007 GXL, I have all the bits now, just trying to get the wiring sorted for my Pioneer headunit. Did you have any luck?

Better late than never!

Finally found some new motivation and decided to tackle this again. I have a 2018 model Kenwood unit with built in SWC learning. With that in mind i decided to strip back the 3 cores from the Kenwood unit and plug in them directly into the SWC connector that normally plugs into the clock spring. I tried the 3 cores in each pin and tried the learning function (while pressing each button) until I worked out which cores did what. Seems my Kenwood unit only has room for 4 buttons. (Prado has 5). Anyway I found them and now just to work backwards to connect them the whole way via the clockspring.


Cores from the steering wheel buttons themselves are:

White
Grey - ground
Brown

The PC CD cable was what was used on the old IDE CD/DVD drives on PCs to connect the audio out of the drive to the sound card. They typically had 3 wires populating a 4 pin plug.
If you get one of these and remove the pins from the plug carefully, you can insert them into the Toyota plug that attaches to the clock spring and use the other ends to attach to your stereo wires. The links at the start of the tread show how. Hope that helps.

The steering wheels are not that easy to come by. They were only fitted on late 2007-2009 120s. There are Hi-Lux wheels that also fit and I have one in one of my 120s. The leather part is a little thinner that the Prado. there are also Hi-Lux wheels that are similar and will fit, but the air bag detonator is different and the steering wheel controls have a different plug. (I know, I purchased one and it did not work) If you are looking for a steering wheel be very careful that it has the same cruise control stalk as the 120 as it is near impossible to get the wiring loom for the cruise control/audio controls (that are joined) for a wheel that only has one or the other. All wheels seem to have the same mounts and spline, it is only the wiring that is different.
