  • Another post about bash plates

    Hi folks

I've been up to my eyeballs in past posts etc. on bash plates (for a 120 diesel auto).

There seems to be a balanced view on 3mm vs 4mm plates (weight vs strength).

I'm looking at the Custom Accessories (3mm) and the Kaon (4mm) (both are local to me), but I'm all twisted up with the pros and cons of each thickness.

Views on 3mm vs 4mm would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a weekend wannabe, if that helps :-)

    Dave

In all honesty, unless you’re doing what Shauno from 4wd Action does on a regular basis where he’s smashing his underbody on crazy wombatted tracks & dragging the belly of his Cruiser over humps at the top of really steep jump ups, forget about the 4mm. 3mm for the Prado will be just fine. You’d be doing alright if you bent it. You may put small dints/dents in it over the course of a few years of rough off-roading & smashing your weapon through the unseen bottoms of bog holes, but cosmetic appearance isn’t relevant for an underbody bash plate. 3mm is just fine for Prados, 4mm is better for your Landcruisers, Patrols & Land Rover Defenders where the bigger they are the harder they fall.

        Brett,
Not sure I'm Shauno, but I managet to bend my 3mm plate on the simpson trip. I had to drive over it a few times to straighten it.

Hi Corigator, re-see my comment above. You would’ve been absolutely sending it with a fully loaded heavy car to do that which makes you an exception to to the rule because of how hard you had to drive it to do that to the plate. You did alright to bend it & by the sounds of it you would’ve bent a 4mm plate too. No worries though, the great thing about steel is you can hammer the bends back out, or in your case drive over the plate repeatedly.
