  • Awning brands and advice

    Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone can provide a bit of advice about an awning for the Prado (my first awning purchase). Looking at a simple 2m x 2.5 . Good to be able to add flymesh walls. Kings seem to be popular but I hear the poles and fittings could be better. Don't mind paying extra for a better setup.
Hopefully someone can part with their valuable knowledge, and help me not part with cash for a lemon

I’ve had my Rhino rack Sunseeker for years and it has been keeping up really well.

I have a 2.5m x 2.1m (out) Rhino-Rack Sunseeker side awning. I compared it to other similar ones (ARB, TJM etc.) and it seemed like better quality. It is also pretty light (10 Kg including brackets), compact, and integrates nicely with a Rhino-Rack platform (which we have).

There aren't mant accessories for it though. An awning extension and a side wall is all that is available.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I see the current ones are black. Most of the reviews seem to be earlier models (which looked quite good). Looks like you can get the flymesh walls for it too. Looking to see if there are any reviews for the latest black ones (I assume black would get quite hot any radiate a bit of heat)?

I think my Sunseeker is the current one. I got it in February of this year. The fabric is not black, it is a green-grey colour.

I seriously considered a 270 degree awning, but I just couldn't afford the extra weight (25-30 Kg) up on the roof. I already have a bit of weight up there when touring, with all our clothes, bedding, tent and MaxTrax. And they are pricey too.

Hi Money killer. I checked out the 30 second awning. Very impressive indeed and I can see the advantages it provides. It is fairly heavy at about 29 kilos I think you would need a pretty solid rack to attach it to. What do you have yours attached to? I don't currently have a rack installed so not sure if rails and bars would be up to the task (I think rails are rated at about 80Kg). If its 80kg split between the sides then I assume it must be 40kg per side?? Having said that and the quality of the unit I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one if I could satisfy myself that didn't have to cop the extra cost of removing the rails and adding a rack (combined cost of a rack and the awning a bit much to pay at the the moment).

Thanks Money Killer. I have contacted the Awning people regarding mounting requirements and await their feedback.
Thanks for the info DDK and Grinbot.Good to get your feed back on the Sunseeker, good option for a lighter unit.

                    Hi Eddie,
did you end up getting sunseeker? I am considering one and wondering if it would fit to Prado default roof rails or do we need a rack installed?
