  • Tow bars on 120

Hi, so we're new to towing...I've done it once or twice in my life, but certainly not regularly. Planning to get a modest caravan (pop top or similar) to tow behind the Prado.

May seem like a silly question, but attached first image is the current tow bar on the 120 we just bought (but are yet to take posession of). I keep seeing towbars on Prados where you can see the width of the tow bar support (2nd image attached) and it's not embedded in the bumper through a cut-out like ours.

Is that a different type of tow bar, or maybe just what they look like on a 150 series or something? Is this something we'll need to look at upgrading, or is ours the standard tow bar we can plan to tow a caravan with on the 120? Thanks in advance for any advice.

(And yes, we definitely plan to do a towing course before jumping in!)

On the 90 series you can see the whole towbar, even the OEM Toyota one.

The left pic is the Toyota tow bar which most new 120 Prado owners ordered at the time of purchase of their new car. The right pic is an aftermarket one. The Toyota bar will pull the max weight caravan the Prado is allowed to pull. Some people have reported failures of the Toyota one, but I believe the failures were rare. I wouldn’t do gung-ho snatch recoveries with it in soft sand stressing the components. Towing is more gentle than that. The aftermarket tow bars should be well & truly over engineered. When you look at 120’s for sale, it seems most of them by a ratio of around 9:1 have the Toyota bar fitted.

Was there not a recall on these bars to tighten the bolts? If so check that it was done. There may be a sticker somewhere.

My Prado was never fitted with a towbar so I initially looked second hand but didn't like the idea of cutting into the bumper.I also wanted a full width bar and ended up with a HR for a bit under $500 from ebay. I'm not mechanical but between dad and I we got it in. Most nerve racking part was removing the bumper without scratching it. The Toyota online manual manual did recommend taping up each side of the join with painters tape to help prevent scratches. The kit was well packed with comprehensive instructions. Very happy with the bar but if you were to move away from the factory bar there would be a cutout in the bumper. Click image for larger version
