  • SatNav from 2021 70 Series Landcruiser into 2008 GXL Prado

    Hi All
I have successfully installed a PZQ60-00345 Satnav Bluetooth Radio from 2021 70 Series Landcruiser (and some other models) into my 2008 GXL Prado.
This is a great modern unit with Touch Screen, great Colour SATNAV (maps are from Nokia so same as Garmin maps) and perfect Bluetooth functionality that just works and pairs and works with phone and Music so easily. It has a Micro SD socket for the Maps, USB socket for MP3 etc and a CD Player.

It also has a DAB Radio as well as AM/FM but an antenna is needed for this and I haven't attempted this yet.
The DAB Radio needs to be enabled via the SYSTEM Menu. This is accessed by holding down the AUDIO Key when the radio is on and switching the headlights on and off 3 times.
This menu has lots of things that can mess up the radio so don't fiddle. You've been WARNED.

Remove old radio and all existing Patch cables noting whether there are the two long wires Green and Purple present for the Reverse and Speed sensing attached to one of the Patch Cables and that also disappear down behind the Glove Box area.
These two cables are needed for the new radio. If they are part of an existing Patch cable then this is good as you won't have to run them yourself (as described below). I cut them at the Patch Cable (leaving an inch or so on the existing patch cable in case reconnection is needed at a later date) so they are present behind the where the new radio goes, and removed this old patch cable.

    Have the following parts.

PZQ60-00346 Owners manual (optional - if you want)

    PZQ60-00260 GPS Antenna

PZQ60-230 Patch Harness for Reverse Camera. Plugs into Cars Harness and radio (24 Pin socket).

PZQ60-00141 Patch Harness for steering wheel controls and Speed and Reverse signal.

PZQ60-00350 Patch harness ALSO for for steering wheel controls and Speed and Reverse signal PLUS Radios Microphone/Bluetooth enabling connector (see notes below).

PZQ60-00161 Adapter for antenna - This plugs into the Existing antenna plug, the Radios Antenna Socket AND the 10 Pin Main Power and Front Speakers Socket on Radio
This also has short set of wires and a socket that the Car's Main 10 pin plug goes into (instead of the radio)

The smaller existing Rear Speaker plug on the cars Loom goes straight into smaller socket next to the Main socket at back of Radio as for your old radio.

PZQ60-00260 GPS antenna - this goes on top of the Instrument Cluster (Speedo/Tacho etc) and Under the dash.
Lower Steering Column using the lever on the column. Remove the two Plastic screw plugs under the top of the Cluster and pull back a little the transparent screen to expose the top of the Instrument cluster.
Be gentle and don't break anything. I have big hands and managed this OK.
Clean really well with alcohol/ methylated spirits the middle front (closest to you) recessed square area on top of the instrument cluster, cut the square adhesive ground plane that comes with the GPS antenna to fit the recessed square and stick it on the recess. If you don't have the ground plane just cut a square of galvanised iron sheet and fix with good quality (3M) double sided tape.
The GPS antenna (it has a magnetic base) can now be magnetically attached to the Ground Plane.
Run the GPS cable to the area behind the radio being careful to stick it down (I used double sided tape) and cable tie it in a few places so there will be no rattles.

PZQ60-00141 Patch Harness 20 pin to 28 pin.
Plugs into Cars harness 20 pin plug and the patch cable PZQ60-00350 28 pin plug (ie both patch cables in series).
PZQ60-00141 also has three long cables that go to Speed sensor (purple I think), Reverse (green?) and handbrake switch (red - I don't think this Handbrake connection is needed as new Radio doesn't seem to recognise it; but everything works)
These wires have snap on wire joiner connectors that I connected to existing Speed and Reverse wires I left existing at rear of radio. If these aren't there then run the cables to the connection points for the reverse signal and the speed signal. These connection points have been well covered in many Pradopoint posts so search for them if you don't know what this means.

PZQ60-00350 Patch harness plugs into Radio's 28 pin connector AND the Radio's Microphone connector (very bottom left socket looking at rear of radio) and the other end into the PZQ60-00141 patch cable.
The new radio has a built in microphone that is activated by PZQ60-00350 Patch Cable! The Bluetooth functions won't work until this Patch Cable is installed properly.

PZQ60-230 Patch Harness for Reverse Camera Plugs into Cars Harness and 24 Pin Socket in radio.

You need the Toyota Reverse camera if not already installed - car has the loom wiring for this already including the plug at existing Loom behind radio.
This Camera can be bought from Toyota. Genuine is best as the voltage is specific to Toyota Radios. It also has detailed installation instructions which you really do need.
Reverse Camera won't work until reverse signal from Green wire to Reverse is connected as per the PZQ60-00141 notes above.

You don't need any existing GPS antenna, Microphone or Talk switch (if any) from eg a PZQ60-00200 old radio. They won't work with the new radio.
There are two images below of the radio and also the connection diagram for the back of the Radio.

    Enjoy

        Hi, I ambitiously (or foolishly) bought the same stereo to install into my gxl120. It plugs in and turns on, but wont get radio or gps reception, and wont play audio from a CD, as well as the no microphone connected error. I have a list of harnesses you listed;
        PZQ00-00230
        PZQ00-00350
        PZQ00-00141
        PZQ00-00161
        PZQ00-00260

I dont have and dont plan to use a reverse camera, and i have a green plug under my dash which i suspect is the gps antenna from the PZQ60-00300 that I removed.
What is the bare minimum i need to get this operational (Bluetooth music & AM/FM radio)? I have tried to find these cables etc online with very limited success. Are they all toyota part numbers that my local parts dept can get for me, and what was the approx cost of the patch cables. I am keen to get this working, as my old 00300 was pretty useless without its screen.
Cheers, thanks for putting the work in to get these working.

          Hi Highmile120.
You will need to buy/order all the patch cables/adapters/GPS antenna etc I listed from Toyota. Generally not expensive (~$20 or so each from memory - gps antenna a bit more but necessary due to the different connector).
If you have the genuine rear camera still installed above the rear number plate then you might as well buy the PZQ60-230 Patch Harness for Reverse Camera also but this isn't necessary for the other functions to work.
The radio is fantastic and worth around $5,000 from Toyota so definitely spend a bit more to get it working.
Yes, you'll need to have all the parts I specified for it to work, so its not surprising that nothing works with just the basic power and speaker plugs etc.
Read my original post until all is very clear then buy the parts and enjoy.
          Let's know how you go.
          Cheers

Project update: successfully installed the head unit and have every function minus reverse camera working. I don't have a reverse camera and don't particularly need/want one in this car.
            I ordered the following parts from my local dealer (Albany WA);
            PZQ60-00230 - $15.50
            PZQ60-00350 - $32.87
            PZQ60-00141 - $20.93
            PZQ60-00161 - $18.63
            PZQ60-00260 - $61.13

I used all parts except for -00230 which was for the reverse camera and have it working exactly how I wanted.
It all goes together pretty self explanatory when used with information provided above by Translucidus. However there are a few things I want to clarify.
PZQ60-00141 has 3 long leads that are used to connect into speed sensor (purple), reverse signal (green) and handbreak signal (red). Not using a reverse camera I omitted connecting the green wire and that has had no adverse effects. Red is not required on this unit, so red and green were rolled together and cable tied together and tucked in the console. Using the provided scotch lock thing, I connected the purple wire to the purple/red/white wire in the car that runs off the side to the glove box area, my research has lead me to believe that this wire is only present in GXL and likely Kakadu models, but not in GX as they had no need for speed sensor to head unit? Welcome to be corrected on that however. After driving around with the head unit not set up waiting for parts to arrive I had a P0500 speed sensor error code, wiring this in fixed that issue. I will attach a photo so that this is more clear as I was worried about it not being the right wire as some other threads seemed to have conflicting info.
With the gps antenna (PZQ60-00260), I struggled to get the dash cluster out, so I cleaned a flat section of the AC ducts with metho as prescribed above, and then cut the base plate in half before super gluing it on, then a dab of super glue used to hold the antenna to the plate. It has worked well in my testing so far in this location so I have no issue with it, and it was a bit easier than having to move the dash cluster.
The microphone built into the head unit is sufficient for phone calls and it is no muffled or anything, so an external mic is not needed.
I am very grateful for the information provided by Translucidus above, and I hope I have been able to build on it helpfully. I will add some photos from the process to make it a bit more clear.
I recommend this swap, the head unit cost me $150 off marketplace, and since these are a surplus product from the "change everything thats factory" VDJ79 mindset you can probably get it cheaper, and the sum total off harnesses from Toyota were $163.97, with the whole swap only costing $313.97, probably $200 cheaper than any comparable aftermarket double din unit.

Photo 2: GPS Antenna location. I couldnt get the dash cluster out easily so I installed the GPS antenna on top of one of the AC ducts. I cut the base plate in half, super glued it on, and then used a drop of glue to hold the antenna to the base plate. Its done probably 6-7 hours of driving in the 2-3 days since the update post I made and has had no issue with rattles or positioning.

Photo 3: Speed sensor wire, this purple/red/white wire is the speed sensor wire, it is visible in photo 1 where this runs behind the dash. I drove the car for 2-3 weeks without the head unit functioning which caused the car to throw a P0500 speed sensor error, wiring the head unit with the cables listed and connected the -00141 purple wire to this speed sensor wire alleviated the code, again, 6-7 hours of driving and no issues since. the red and green wires from -00141 wire rolled up and tucked behind the dash if i ever need to wire in reverse or handbrake signal.

Photo 4: looks quite nice within the dash face, wrong shade of black but its fine, probably looks better in this than the 79 it came out of. the black metal bracket was for an old Nokia car kit bracket to suit an iPhone 4! A lot of old wiring and ancient tech was pulled out during the initial install, i think even the Romans had fancier stuff!

Photo 5: First test drive with it in before the silver panels went back in. Maps happily working in my rural back roads, music sounds good, built in microphone works well, even discovered a free Lenny Kravitz CD from the previous owner... Ignore the cracked windscreen too, this car has always seemed bad for getting stone chips and cracking screens.

Hope the information I have provided will be able to help someone if they choose to do this install. I hope the photos make it clear what goes where etc. Best of luck for all!

"The DAB Radio needs to be enabled via the SYSTEM Menu. Great follow up HIGHMILE120 and glad to see you've got it all sorted. It is a rather good media unit and much more robust and cheaper than the usual Android units you could spend ~$800 on.
Alnorman, you do enable the DAB radio via the procedure described However for it to work you need a DAB Antenna plugged into the DAB antenna socket on the back of the radio. The DAB antenna socket is the Black socket just to the left of the main dual antenna socket on the right side of the back of the radio. I haven't figured out how to do this yet as the correct connector at least is needed. I believe the Toyota DAB antenna is integrated into some other top of windscreen part. Toyota couldn't supply me with one (from memory) and I've yet to sort out some sort of connector.

translucidus...thanks for your comments. yes i can see there is a separate antenna input for DAB. antenna. the DAB connector is almost identical to the GPS antenna input....just the connector housing is a mirror image. i think an SMB plug would work ok, just push on and forget the plastic housing. https://au.element14.com/amphenol-co...mb%20connector

I've just ordered an antenna from eBay that says is compatible with late model Toyota Radios: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/165655787870
                        $13.70.
I'll let you know how it goes. It's a complete package with stick-on antenna, 3m lead and SMB Plug that looks like it'll be a match for the Radio.

Finally, the DAB+ Radio works and its Fantastic in quality - as well as 30 odd new stations.

Above photo is radio working before pushing back into dash.
Below are photos of the extra adapter antenna lead with straight connectors and the installed DAB Antenna on the left side of the windscreen.

I received the DAB antenna some weeks ago but as it had a right-angle connector it didn't reach the Radio's connector within the socket at the back of radio.
I sent away to China for a short adapter cable - male to female with STRAIGHT connectors - when received connected it all up, folded and ziptied the antenna cabling within all the foam to stop rattles and Voila - beautiful DAB+ Radio as well as the FM and AM.
The top of the DAB Antenna should be 15cms below the top of the windscreen. The stick-on Black earth strap that goes inside the door pillar under the trim just sticks onto the metal of the pillar. No need to scratch off the paint

To initially discover the stations I pressed the up or down arrows on left (seek). They also switch between blocks of stations (different DAB+ radio thingys)
You can also go into settings on the DAB+ Radio screen and do things. I just ticked everything.

This is the link to the adapter - very fast delivery by the way (few weeks from China).
