  • bash plate damage

Had the 120TD serviced today. 50,000K's
When my wife picked it up she asked "how was it"
They commented that they had to do a bit of bash plate remodeling as there were a few hitting important bits.
Mentioned we might consider getting new ones soon.

    Question.
Has anybody bought new (Toyota) or aftermarket or home made their own bash plates.

I know the ones underneath got a hammering at Harvey a few weeks back in the mud ruts. The tank ones are still good, its just the front diff area ones. you know, the lowest ones.
And I know they aren't really tough, 1.5 or 2mm at best.
But would it be worth it to make heavier steel bash plates as opposed to the extra weight?
I haven't had a good look under there to really assess the situation.
(is that how you spell assess or is that lots of asses?)

    A penny for your thoughts.

    Hey, good question Jeff.

I had similar thoughts after seeing what damage I had done up at Mundaring. Mainly front plate - where I was doing an impersonation of a snow plow - and one spot on the side tank - came off a rock too quick and sat it on it's bum.

The existing plates should pop off quickly enough to be able to change them over if needed.

OR - does anyone know of any Prado wreckers - where it may be possible to source a few spares ?

    Cheers

Mine are pretty dinged up but I can't really see the point in replacing them with toyota items, as the first serious offroad trip they will be bent agian. My plan is to replace them with heavier duty items. My only issue is finding the time to get it done. My inital thought is to fabricate some myself, though realistically given my work schedule I'll probably end up paying to get something made up. If there is enough interest from people possibly we could approach someone like K&N.

I'm certainly keen to explore something slightly stronger than the current aluminium foil :?

I think Justo may want to have a look at something heavier duty as well

My thoughts exactly. Allthough I would have finished it with " it wont get done."
If I get time and the weather is not too crappy I might jump under and take a proper look.
I don't know if I should take them off yet as they might not go back on with all the metal stress etc.

There was a discussion about bash plates some time back on Perth 4x4. There is a mob in Malaga that will make bash plates apparently. They are called Idlewild Off Road. Their web address is as follows

I was thinking of upgrading mine one day but it would need to be "kustom" designed as the access to the sump hole is there and i was also going to try and cover the gap between the bull bar and the exsisting bash plate.3mm aluminium check plate bent or something like that.$$$

                  Hey Matt

Do you have any idea of price ? or is this still in the development pipeline ?

or Darren's contact details at ATS and I'll drop him a line and check it out.

                      Hey Russ

Have you seen the DIY plate that I knocked together for the same gap - it's made out of 3mm ally checker plate and seems to do the required job.

Guys, has anyone had a lot of trouble with gathering crap in general in the two vents at the front of the front diff bash plate. We do plenty of beach and i think this will just be a big sand scope, anyone else have experiences with this. Also today the dealer mentioned to me about alternator issues in the petrol prado's picking up to much crap because they are down low in the engine bay and dieing. Has anyone experienced this.

Nothing in the alternator - yet - but those front vents turn it into a bit of a snow plow in sand.
