  • No brakes and the "ABS" "VSC TRC" and "VSC OFF" dash lights are on and a loud annoying buzzer

Just had a big problem with the old girl, next to no brakes at all. I hadn't driven the car for the past week or so but everything was working fine last time it was driven. Today when I hoped in about to head down to the shops there was a loud high pitched alarm and the following dash lights were constantly illuminated "ABS" "VSC TRC" and "VSC OFF".

Initially the brakes seemed to be working fine, but as I started to move they rapidly got very heavy, to the point the brake pedal is rock hard and takes a lot of force just to slow a little. It feels like there is no vacuum assist. I have checked the owners manual, not very helpful, take it to Toyota and don't drive it obviously.

I have disconnected the battery to try and reset the ECU but no joy.

Not sure if this is relevant but the last time I drove it I was not able to engage the centre diff lock, the light just keeps flashing.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have been doing more trouble shooting trying to narrow down the problem. I have checked all the fuses in the engine bay along with the fuses in the car next to the drivers right knee, all good. There is no vacuum line as the Grande does not have a conventional brake booster. Normally when I turn the ignition on you can hear lots of different noises from under the bonnet, but at the moment it is strangely quiet. The pump in the master cylinder normally runs to build up pressure when the ignition is first turned on but it no longer does this. This must be why my brake pedal is very hard as there in no pressure from the master cylinder pump.

Its starting to look like this won't be an easy (cheap) fix

Sounds like it may be the traction/brake/abs booster if that's what you call it. Being the grande it has the big clear plastic tank with the pump on the side of it instead of your regular booster. If it's this there about 3k for a new one or some reco them for around $1800. I hope it's not this. Maybe it's just the pump ???....cheers Steve

Hi Steve, yes the problem seems to be the pump in the master cylinder assembly. After lots of fault finding I that 12v power is getting to the pump but it is not operating. I gave it a little tap with the screw driver and the pump started working again problem found, maybe. Once the pressure built back up the alarm stopped and the warning lights went out, everything seems to be back to normal. I stopped and started the car a few times and the pump operated fine. An hour later I went to get the kids from school and the problem is back . I tapped it a few time but this time couldn't get it going again. At least I am sure I have narrowed down the problem.

After looking at the assembly for awhile I started to wonder if I could just pull the motor off and replace the brushes. It looks like a basic 12v motor, nothing too special.

not my picture but it does show the brake assemble and the 12v motor on the bottom.

Does anyone have thoughts on this? Good idea or bad?

The part number (For your rig) for just the "PUMP ASSY, BRAKE BOOSTER" is "47960-30030" (But i would confirm this number with Toyota)

          Click link below!

          Amayama

          BUT!

If you want to play safe and buy the whole unit "BRAKE BOOSTER ASSY, W/MASTER CYLINDER" it is part number "47050-60090"

          Click link below!

          Amayama

Just confirm part numbers given they are an expensive item.

          Cheers

Thanks for the very helpful post, this is why I love Prado Point

I checked on Amayam with my VIN number and it turns out the pump and accumulator assembly is PN# 47070-30060. I decided to order the complete assemble just incase. when I pulled mine apart the motor was totally stuffed, the brushes had worn all the way through the Commutator so not an easy fix

I have spent most of the day trying to source a replacement, Toyota want around $3000 ouch. There are none at the wreckers that I could find. I finally ordered the part through All Four x 4 Spares in Kotara near Newcastle, $1650 and about three weeks shipping time. Still expensive but better than Toyota. Amayama listed it at $1017.82, I thought it was much closer to the All Fourx4 spare price which is why I ordered it through them, will have to write my figures down in future

I was able to remove just the pump and accumulator assemble and leave the rest of the master cylinder in place so that saved a lot of time. Now I have three weeks of time and no Prado

It wouldn't surprise me. Whats the go with Amayama? Can anyone order from there? And are shipping and import duties very high? I am yet to to use them but have been hearing more an more about them.

The annoying thing in all this I just spent nearly the equivalent on a diff lock just to get my brakes back, luckily I was able to find the problem and should be able to change the parts myself, so that saved a lot. Looks like I need to start saving for those diff locks again. One positive whilst in at All Four x 4 spares I noticed they sell e-lockers , might have to check the price next time I'm in there.

Amayama seems like a reputable company. I have never ordered from them before but quite a few PP'ers have without issue. Delivery time is a bit long but you save quite a bit.

Amayama are legit and when you order from them you are ordering genuine parts without the middle man or Toyota's mark-up pricing!

I did do allot of research on Amayama then ordered from them to make sure that they was the real deal before spreading the good word on Pradopoint!.

All's you have to do is set-up an account with them (http://www.amayama.com/) and you can pay via PayPal or credit card (I chose PayPal so to hide my credit card details) and about 2-4 x weeks delivery to the front door! no trade account needed.

Here below is an old thread on the subject of Amayama!

Thanks guys for the great info. I think I should set up an account, its always good to have another option to the high local Toyota prices. One day I will replace my cracked dash.

My turn on this one... 2004 grande with 170000 on the clock.

Toyota quoted me $3800 for the part plus 4 to 6 weeks delivery, none in the country.

Got it from Amayama for $937.37 to the door in one week.

All good and back on the road.

                        Thanks everyone.

I have run into this EXACT problem.

I own a 2003 Grande, V6 4L. Should I get do any other checks prior to purchasing this rather expensive part?

The issue is intermittent. Here is how it played out:

                              - I decided to remove all plugs, clean them out and re-insert them. It decided to work for a short while.

                              - When it is NOT working, the brake pedal goes completely stiff, and doesn't depress whilst the ABS, VSC TRC lights flash and buzzing ensues

                              - ABS, VSC TRC lights on with annoying buzzing whilst doing 100km/hr on the motorway trying to drive the vehicle home. I pulled over without incident using the hand brake. Popped the bonnet, hit the booster pump with a spanner, and it kicked over. I managed to get into my street where is played up again.

                              - I did some diagnostic testing the old fashioned way and this is what came up:

                              ABS DIAGNOSTIC CODES

11 - Open or short circuit in ABS solenoid relay circuit

46 - Malfunction in master cylinder pressure sensor

51 - Pump motor is locked
Open circuit in pump motor ground

52 - Brake booster pump motor malfunction

53 - Brake booster pump motor relay malfunction

                              54 - Pressure switch malfunction

56 - Accumulator low pressure malfunction

                              VSC DIAGNOSTIC CODES

43 - Malfunction in ABS control system

33 - Open or short circuit in yaw rate sensor circuit

The problem is still intermittent and not permanent despite those codes.

Can anybody make a definitive decision on where the problem has started based on those codes? Or is this entire assembly shot to sh!t and in need of replacement?
