I am picking up my Jayco Outback in a week, I would like to know of those guys who have an Electric Brake Control Unit installed, which one they used and why....and also, where did they mount it?
Tekonsha prodigy, on ebay for about $165
Versatile mounts anywhere, variable and damn good
I have mine mounted to the fuse cover to the right below steering wheel, that way I can just replace the cover when selling vehicle, no drill holes
This is the unit that I had in mind. There is one on there for $100 at the moment, but I am sure it will go up.
Can anyone recommend someone in Brisbane to install it?
I have a Prodigy too. Mines on the left hand side of the steering wheel (on the dash). I like the idea of the fuse panel cover although the theory off having it on the left is so that your passenger (if you have one!) can operate the manual override in an emergency. Not sure how practical that is really... by the time they did it you'd probably be already off the road! Mine's mounted in it's quick release mounting bracket (lets you move it to another car easy) but I reckon if you've got no intention to do that, trying to mount if without the bracket would be better as it would be a bit narrower, I've bumped it with my (left) knee a couple of times.
I started out with the Hayman Reese unit. It was basically useless, as it didn't have any means of measuring deceleration or proportioning the amount of braking force. You always knew the camper was there, because the braking signals to the camper was always a compromise.
Then I bought a Prodigy and fitted it where the ashtray was. PERFECT. It's virtually a set and forget device. Whenever it isn't, you can make VERY easy adjustments to suit your driving style/towed vehicle mass/ and road conditions. And a lot of the time, you barely know the camper's there.

Yep, got Prodigy is well, mounted in the spot where ashtray supposed to be...

Can I ask how you guys mounted it in the ash tray section? You mentioned no screws? Would this only work with the prodigy? I have a voyager in my old car.
The auto elect that I am getting to fit the prodigy on Thursday hasn't done one before in the ash tray. Is there anything I need to tell him about how it is done? Does the dash need to come out as I've been told by another guy? Does it sit in some sort of a bracket? Appreciate anyones comments
Thanks Geoff, it is the Prodigy that I am getting installed. The other auto elecs that I spoke to said that it was a 4 hour job and the dash needed to come out. The guy I am getting to do it quoted based on 2 hours and even though it is simple as you say, I think I'll go with him for the piece of mind regarding wiring etc.
I assume the plastic bracket comes with the controller?
Thanks, Midge
2 hours is probably not out of the question if he's not done one before, but in reality a good auto sparky should be able to suss it out an have the install done in about an hour. As long as you have confidence in him though, that's all that matters.
