  • 6-speed gearbox crunches when selecting 3rd?

    We have a not long bought a 2008 prado petrol and i often crunch 3rd gear, not if it is eased in all the other gears are okay it is a 6 speed. Does any one else have the same problem, or what could the cause be....

    Worn synchro I suspect. Bassically needs transmission rebuild to fix it.. $$$. If its still driveable, you could just live with it, but be aware that you could end up stranded and need a whole new transmission (even more $$$) if the synchro lets go completely. It happened in my parents old 5 speed hiace. The 2nd gear synchro collar split in half and damaged the box beyond repair.

      How many kms has it done? You really should change the fluid at 40,000km intervals.
      As a first step, I would be changing out the fluid to Valvoline DURAGEAR 75W-90 and see how it goes.
      I would not be surprised if a change of fluid solves the issue but then I wouldn't be surprised if syncro on 3 is gone as well, as Declan has mentioned..

                Hi,
                I have had the same problem with third gear. Ive changed the oil twice now and run castrol syntac 75w-90. I can still catch third gear when cold when I forget to go easy but its only like that for a few minutes until it warms up. I was running the Multitrax before but find that this syntac gives a better result. Ill look at what Roo has mentioned with the extra Nulon G70 but as long as Im easy on her for her first few gear changes I don't have any problems otherwise.

                There have been a few others that have had the same problem. Some say its a weakness in the gearbox in general for the 6 speed? Do the 150's run the same 6 speed as the 120's?

                  I had the same issue with my 6 speed manual Nov 2007 Prado, was the third gear sincro. Got it fixed under extended warranty about 2 months ago.

                    My 3rd gear was a bit notchy before the box crapped itself. 5 speed.
                    Worse when cold.
                    An old trick us grease monkeys used to do is use 500ml of transmission fluid (dex3).
                    The g70 is good shoit too!
                    This really helps with the synchros.
                    So does castrol syntrax, but it's $30 a litre!

                      Having the exact same problem with my 6 speed GX 2007 120, contacted dealer to see if covered. Now playing the waiting game.

                        I will have to do the same. Mine crunches from 4th to 3rd and 2nd to 3rd. Will take some video footage of it and present it to Toyota just in case it doesn't do it when they drive...

                          Just an update from my last post in this thread. The Nulon G70 additive I put in fixed the 2nd to 3rd gear change problem straight up. Have never caught 3rd gear since the oil change and this stuff in it. Will just use it as the norm for when I service the gear box.

                            G'Day all,

                            Got Toyota to replace my clutch with a standard one from Terrain Tamer, machine the flywheel and replace the rear main seal. Very happy with the results, gearbox doesn't crunch anymore, very smooth in operation and the clutch pedal is very light. Total cost was $1001 plus the clutch kit which was $973.

                              From the feel of my 6 speed

                              V6 gxl 2005.. fith doesnt like to be rushed but rest fine

                              My box oil is fine with the castrol product , but the rig has had issues from word go ,,, ( new )
                              that the stock clutch was shit! as per log book

                              evan for me , bought a 97k, it was noticeable but , i have feathered it now for another 40k

                              toyota said there was no probs from the original owner , but its just a shit product.. / component

                              I try hard to get the most outta this clutch but know the stock clutch is crap... butane
