  • Thump noise when stopping. (Tailshaft clunk)

    G'day,

My Prado (05 V6, 5sp auto) has a small but annoying "thud" in the driveline some where.

When i have stopped at traffic lights there is a thud that comes from the driveline. It doesn't happen all the time and is varied in harsness from only just noticable to feeling like someone has just tapped the towbar with there car.

I thought it was the Auto box changing down to first, but Toyota ruled that out yesterday when they were testing the car. They don't know what could be causing this.

Does anyone else notice this in their Prado?
    Cheers, Terry.

    G'day

Yes, mine has done the same thing...not always but just out of the blue it happens.....?

My Prado also (V6, 5sp auto, Grande)
Was trying to evaluate when it did it ....but not happening often enough.

only done 17k so will ensure Toyota know about it on next service ...let me know if you find anything.

    cheers

    John

      Mine does it as well
      (05 GXL 5 speed)
The first time it did it I thought someone had run into me !!

It has done it since new, so will find out at the first service what Toyota says about it

        Guys,

Mine was giving me the irrits on a couple of occasions. Both fixed now. Try these:

        1. Hitch loose in the receiver (towbar). I found the nut had come loose and the hitch was moving around during stop/start. Lucky it has the R-clip to stop it falling out completely. When I put the Treg in (seperate hitch) it seems to be okay. But it usually has the CT on.

        2. Check your second row seats. Sometimes they don't lock properly after you return them from the folded position. I found you really have to push them back firmly to get them to lock properly. The sound from that is like an intermittent drumming sound especially when stop/start or cornering. Weird  Because the thump is transmitted through the floor it can give the impression of coming from underneath the car.

        Hope that's all it is.

          Thanks for the replys,

          John (jvprado),
Mine has just clocked 30,000ks and it is happening more offen now or i am just noticing it more now.

          Tim,
That is exactly what i thought happened when i first felt it, that someone had just tapped the back of the car. And yours is a manual so that rules out the auto playing up.

          John,
I checked the rear seats, the fridge slide and drawers to make sure nothing was rolling around lose.

I am beginning to think it has something to do with the rear end, maybe brakes (ABS) or trailing arm bushes or something like that. I have had both rear shocks replaced under warranty.

I will get back on to Toyota in the next few weeks.

Let me (all of us) know if anyone finds out about this.
          Cheers, Terry.

I have noticed the same thud every now and then when I pull up to traffic lights, intersections etc. I thought it may be an automatic transmission problem but if it is happening on Tim's manual as well, then I am kinda stumped on what it could be.

I am up for my 10k service in a couple of weeks so I will raise it with Toyota and see what they have to say.

              Driveline thud

First post Guys and Gals so bare with me! or is that bear with me!

I get the occasional thud as well. Usually notice it when stopping at front gate to check the mail box.

IMHO I think it may have something to do with the constant 4WD and some sort of windup in the transmission. Mines an 8/03 Grande with 60k on the clock.

                  Hi guys,

Well Prado is back from Toyota Woolloongabba (Qld) and they know about it. Aparantly it has something to do with the transmission shifting back to first as the engine comes down the gears as you stop. I didn't have to say much and the service manager said they'd look at it straight away.

From what I could gather, they 'loosened' the connection between the rear of the auto transmission and the tailshaft as well as checking the diff fluid levels. Not too sure what the actual process consisted of but it seems to have gone away.

See how we get on with the problem, I have a funny feeling it will come back in a few 1000k's...

Just turned the 100,000 over in the 2003 GXL auto diesel, towed a 2400kg van for 47,000 of that and no troubles at all so far.
10 days to go and the 3 years is up also.
Hope it keeps going the same for the next 100,000 k's.

I know when these noised come up the first thing to happen is the thought process of "that sounds expensive" i'm exactly the same and had a noise similar to this happening quite frequently.

after shaking and kicking and constant start stop driving trying to work out what it was it turned out to be the jack. it wasn't extended once put back in it's home so it was rocking back and forward with the car when it stopped.

                      fixed by tightening up.

may not be related but worth a look......

                        Gents,
I was in at the dealer today and was told that Toyota have now recognised the "thump" which some of you are getting. I was told that they have now printed up a Service Bulletin which shows how the problem is to be fixed. The Service Manager said that it had just recently come out and it had something to do with the driveshaft. I asked if it was an easy fix and was told "yes".

                        Cheers

                        Dave.

I cna't say mine actually thuds, but sometimes I am aware of something happening as if its some play in driveline when stopping.

                            Piggy,
Mine is the same. I have only had it happen twice and both times at lights.
The service manager i normally speak to just got back from holidays. He rang me about the fuel tank problem and i asked about the driveshaft. He said it is as simple as removing the driveshaft and greasing a spline.
Will find out more next week.

                            Cheers
