  • Transmission stalls when driving around 40Km/hr

    Hello:

I have been driving my Toyota Prado 120 (2003) and noticed the transmission stalling when I drive around 40 km/hr.

The RPM needle drops and then jumps for no apparent reason.

I took it to Toyota and they found no codes.

They said nothing is wrong from their perspective(and thanks for the 10,000Ksh)

    The issue continues.

Sometimes I put my foot on the accelerator and it doesn't respond the way it used to.

What should I have my mechanic look for? He already cleaned the air box and the air filter.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        Just an update on this.

I took the vehicle to Toyota in Nairobi, Kenya and had them replace the fuel filter and the MAF sensor.

Not sure if it will take some time for these changes to come into effect.

Haven't noticed any difference at this point.

Also, as an aside, while driving home from Toyota, the fuel filter started to buzz, then popped and all kinds of fuel came gushing out. Eventually the car stopped. No fun being stuck on the side of the road. This is even more the case when you are in Nairobbery. Guess the Toyota technicians don't know how to properly install a fuel filter.

From my experiences with automatic transmissions, and I assume yours is an automatic. If the transmission oil level is not set correctly by the person servicing the vehicle, such a stall may occur.

Try having the transmission oil level checked for the correct level, by your dealer.

          Much luck.

            Hello Matt,

Toyota just sent me a text. Here is the exact text: "We have diagnosed the throttle body as the problem area. We however, don't have stock on the part at the moment and will have to special order it. It will cost 180,000Ksh." Yikes! When I asked if the part can be cleaned, I have been told it will not solve the problem. Apparently, it is the throttle position sensor and the throttle body that are being replaced.

Not sure if anyone has any suggestions for me. Hate to spend the bucks on this and it doesn't solve my problem.

Man, oh, man it is difficult to find well-trained(and honest) repair people in Kenya.

What do my Prado-point brothers advise?

This sounds like a fair diagnosis in my opinion. If the throttle body position sensor is faulty, it will also cause the engine to stall.

Just for everyone's interest(to show you what Toyota is charging in Kenya these days), I have attached a photo of the quote.

Didn't realize the throttle body had to be replaced with the Throttle Position Sensor because they are one and the same(that is what Toyota is telling me).
