Centre Diff Issues??

hey guys i was having a play around in the garage the other day wight he centre diff lock button and when i activated it and tried to drive it wouldn't let me go anywhere and it was like the brakes were on, tried to de-activate it and it wouldn't release for a while until i put it in and out of reverse.. was reading through the manual once i realised that the car wasn't wanting to move and it simply said that push the button to activate and push to de activate.. does anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on.??? would be greatly appreciated.
