  • Air locker 'O' ring seal issue

Well to be honest I don't like the new style 'o' rings that ARB are using in the new diff locks. We have fitted two, one in my 120 and the other in the brothers 150. ARB installed the 150 and I did my own. Both have leaked enough oil back up the airline that the oil would not allow the compressed air to actuate the diff. The small 5 mm line with oil up it cannot build up the pressure required, particularly if it was cold. I removed the airline from the diff housing, placed a container under the line and blue out the oil. Would have been 50 ml of oil up the line. Both cars have only done 30000 - 50000 km. The diffs now work properly.
This never happened when they used the original 'o' rings that where round. The new ones are a square section with relief on the inside diameter of the 'o' ring, like a inverted radius.
A solution might to place a quick exhaust valve in the airline as close to the diff as possible. This would stop the oil going up the line and blow the oil out instead.

    Really disappointed in this.

    Rusty.

Not my first locker as well. Both my 60 and 80 both where twin airlocked and never had this issue.

The P-ute is going in tomorrow for front and rear TJM prolockers. In my view these are the pick of the manual lockers at the moment but time will tell. Trying to plan a trip next June/July so I will lock the back of the 150. Have a year to see how these go.

Spoke to ARB today. I am told the preload on the bearings needs to be double that of the book, 4 notches instead of two. Reason is the diff moves on the bearings and that is one reason the seals leak.

Sorry but as a fitter turner that is not 100% correct. The reason the seals leak is the new design and the way the seal holder is retained on the adjusting nut. The original ones had a plate behind the adjuster and was securely held in place, the new ones use a spring clip. Should any movement in this housing occur the new style 'o' will leak. Also told you can replace this new style with the original round 'o' ring.

I don't want to pull the diff out just to replace these seals, unless they fail completely, so instead will install a quick exhaust valve as close to the diff as possible so the oil returning up the line will vent to atmosphere.

Next car will try the E lockers instead.

And my rear auto locker continues to work faultlessly no wires or lines. It just works.

Yep. But it's not a welded diff, it auto unlocks. The slightest pressure of the back wheels in the opposite direction & it easily unlocks.
              Really works 100%.
              Better than I had thought.

Isn't the elocker prone to solenoid failure due to water ingress to the external solenoid?

Has a any one else had this type of problem with the new style air lockers?

Yeah I have had mine leak, I changed them a while ago and after doing the job realized that it was a waste of time as the old ones were still perfect.

Ultimately its more a nuisance than a problem, if it happens again I would just unscrew the airline at the diff and activate the locker to clean out the line and go again for another 18 months.

When I did the job I used the recommended 85w-140 diff oil, not sure what had been used previously, so will be interesting to see if that helps.

I do plan to re route the exhaust points for the lockers down and into the chassis rail, that way any oil mist goes inside the chassis rather than under my bonnet.

This would be a real pain (and smelly) for those with compressors mounted inside the cab.

Sometime in the next year or 2 I will be looking to add lockers to my 79 series, I would go ARB air lockers again but will research the E-lockers, although anecdotally I had heard of a few problems with those as well.

                        Cheers Andrew

Maybe the factory electronic locker, not fitted to Australian Prados though. The Harrop Eaton locker is all internal with just the actuator wire coming out. Easy to repair if damaged, unless its ripped right out of the diff which is very unlikely.

The one in the pic is from SMC but other brands are available. Don't use the ones with the built in silencer as it will clog.

I hope to get one over the weekend and see how muck comes out.

Haven't fitted the quick exhaust yet but the line was in need of a drain again after 10000 km.
Must put this up the list a bit.
