    Hi, I am new here. Love the forum. Just bought a '07 120 VX 1kz 4 speed auto. There is no rear towing eyelet there.The owners manual says, 'never tow a vehicle from the rear with four wheels on ground. This may cause serious damage to the transmission'. Does this mean 'I' should not be pulled from the rear or that I should not pull someone from the rear? Can I pull or get pulled a little bit without the risk of frying my trans? Was the rear eyelet left out by Toyota to not allow me to tow from the rear?

    If your referring to recovering your car from bein bogged for instance it is ok, they are referring to towing a vehicle, ie from a crash site or breakdown site to a garage fro instance.

      Recovery from the rear should use the tow bar with an appropriate recovery point attached into the tow point, and never attach a srecovery strap to a tow ball.

        I am talking about the 'fishing hook' type hook found in the front and back of most off-roaders. Can I not use it safely for recovery?

          Not ideally mate, if you have to recover from the back, use the tow pin in the draw bar, NEVER USE A TOWBALL. For the front if you have to use factory points (which are tie down points, not recovery) then use a bridle to join them and pull off both.

            Assuming they do a Class 4 hitch receiver like we have in OZ of course.

              The 'tie down' points are welded into the chassis, I did the calcs once on the welds and they can take quite a bit of force.

              Disappointing thing about all the add on 'rated' recovery points that people bolt onto the front is that the only thing rated is the steel plate that you bolt on. They all use holes to bolt to the chassis that were not purpose designed for recovery point attachment.

                  Mmm, reguarding recovery points or tiedowns I'd still use a bridle strap on both if you were seriously stuck- It's not worth bending or breaking something. A little work with a shovel can go a long way as well.

                    Agree! Absolutely always attach to two sides with a bridle strap.
