  • Reverse Gear warning

Just recently when engaging reverse gear the warning sound is either delayed or sounds as I am reversing. I am presuming the actuator is sticking. Could anyone advise where the actuator is located. Might save me pulling things apart unnecessarily. Thanks.

Are you sure you're not talking about reverse sensors? As a toyota doesnt beep when put into reverse gear. If you have an aftermarket reverse warning beeper fitted or an aftermarket reverse parking sensors fitted, then yes they beep. the reverse sensors can have a small delay sometimes. Do your reverse lights come on straight away when you go into reverse?

It does, you get a single beep when selecting reverse in the manual models. Well mine does anyway.

Can't help with where it is located though.

I've driven a few manuals and none of them beeped?! Aftermarket or mine spec perhaps? Or maybe the ones I drove were stuffed.. LOL

This is the 6 speed manual and has always beeped when shifting into reverse. It helps to remind that you have gone into reverse and not first. My 2005 did not beep when going into reverse because that shift pattern was clearer. Don’t ask how I know you can make a mistake going into reverse rather than first. Recently the warning beep became delayed and on a couple of occasions gave a continuous beep whilst reversing. I have done some research through a parts site mentioned in another post on this site and it looks like it may be on top of the gearbox near the shift lever. Thanks for the reply’s.

Yep - my 6 speed manual beeps once when selecting reverse. It does this exactly as you finish moving the lever into it's gate.

Ours is 2008 6 speed manual.

              No beeps.

Accidentally shifting into reverse instead of 1st gear? What?

Well, reverse and first are both "up and to the left"...

No, that is not how operating a manual gear shift operates unless it is broken.

1st is aligned with 2nd gear, not with reverse.

To select reverse, you have to have the shift in neutral and then push it left against the pressur on the spring, then push it forward to locate reverse.

Have driven the 120 since 2008 and have never found any way of accidentally selecting reverse instead of 1st gear. There is a significant pressure as soon as someone heads that way.

                  Maybe the V6 is different?

What I meant was that if you go to select first but press a bit too hard as you move up and left, you can occassionally enter reverse...(overcoming the resistance that is in the gate to Reverse)

Not all the time, but I've done it once or twice...

If you are in neutral (ie gearshift resting position: between 3rd and 4th) and you then go to first, you are definitely pushing "up and left" as I first mentioned.

The pressure from the 3/4 neutral position is insignificant, but the pressure to the reverse location IS significant. Have never had an error of selecting reverse instead of first gear. Why would someone press hard against the gate if they wanted to select first? Weird!

Over the many years, I have had only two Auto vehicles, and many manual vehicles. Have driven well over a million km in those manual vehicles. Have done racing trips at Winton and Mallala, and many Motorkhanas in various manual cars including Renault 10, Porsche and Datsuns!. Most are well designed to prevent accidental reverse instead of forward gears. Some have a requirement to push down the gear stick to enter the reverse area, and some are a lot easier than the 120.

The most easy was in a Valiant as a passenger with the three on the tree on the steering wheel. The driver managed to select reverse easily and created a lot of smoke from the tyres. Thankfully, he managed to get back into forward gears

I've never owned an auto. Always manual.

All I'll say is what I briefly said yesterday: Reverse and first are both "up and to the left"...

And entering reverse gives off a single "Beep". Maybe your D4D is different?

I'm not trying to create a pedantic argument, I have no issue with your statements, and we are a little off topic here anyway...

The OP wanted to know what actuated the "Beep" noise when selecting reverse. I assume there's a momentary-make switch inside the box somewhere... but beyond that' maybe look for wires exitting the top of the gearbox?

PS I too have a race car, (Lotus Elise), and have run it in the QLD supersprints for the last 13 years. I too know how to select gears manually...

2008 D4D 6 speed manual. No beep from brand new delivery.

It's not an argument. There is significant pressure entering the reverse gate compared to forward 1/2 area of our D4D 6 speed. Maybe the V6 version reverse gate is different.

If I can find my lost spring tool I could measure the pressure between them.

Well mine is a 2008 D4D 6 manual and it beeped when reverse is selected from new too. Mines a GX with option pack 2 if that makes a difference?
