    Re: Eaton E,locker

There are a few fitted to jeeps in my jeep club, the guys all love them, no failures yet not like the problems they were having destroying thier Arb air lockers , the lockers get regulary abused in extreme conditions, so I don't think you should see any problems in the prado as the prados will never see the extreme streess on their diffs like the jeeps do

Not in Australia. LSD yes, lock no. I think they offer lock in other markets though.

Actually that should read: LSD, a bit, sometimes, on a good day, if no one is watching; lock, no.......................................

            Re: Eaton E,locker

Actually we should qualify the comments about the LSD. If the 120 GXL has option pack 1 and is an automatic then it doesn't have an LSD becuase it has traction and stability control. If it doesn't have the electronic aids then it is fitted with an LSD from the factory but the Toyota LSD is renowned for being fairly poor in operation and the LSD function very short lived. I don't have an LSD in my 120 becuase of the option packs (GX auto with op I and II) but my 90 had the factory LSD and by the time it had 20,000km the car wouldn't scuff wet grass on tight turns.

              Re: Eaton E,locker

The problem with option pack 1 is that it turns off the VSC when you lock the centre diff.

                Re: Eaton E,locker

If you don't have the option pack then you don't have VSC so I cannot see the difference. I am not sure where you would want VSC when it is rough/loose enough to have the centre diff locked. On the beach? Better to keep full power available, you shouldn't be going fast anyway. In soft sand you definately want VSC off. I towed my trailer through a sand track that I used to take with the 90 without the centre diff locked. It took me two goes (yep, bit dim) to realise that everytime the wheel speeds varied enough the VSC started backing the engine power off and I was getting close to coming to a halt in the middle of the track. I would be able to drive my 2wd Rodeo ute through the track. TC still works with the centre diff locked and that is all you need. I have bicycled the 120 through rough stuff with the traction control keeping power to the wheels on the ground and without VSC deciding to take away my desperately needed Nm. Give it a go. Try and climb a sand dune with and without diff lock. I know which will get you further and do less damage to the track.

I would never fit one of these to my vehicle, we have to suffer them fitted to many of our work vehicles, have so many failures (although I should qualify this by saying we do have some rough operators) - some trucks are on their 4th or 5th centre. They are a pig to drive on the the tar, around a roundabout they constantly lock and unlock causing the truck to almost change directions mid curve.

Sounds like you are talking about an auto locker Adrian, not an E locker. They only come on when you flick the switch.

Yep you're correct, some of our trucks are fitted with Detroit Lockers not E-Lockers but Detroit Lockers were mentioned in this thread. E-Lockers look the goods to me.

You sure on this one ?? My mate has 120 06VX auto and says it has LSD but been a VX it come with stability and traction as standard ?? and Im sure last time he changed the diff oil he siad it had a tag indicating LSD. I know 100% my 90 series grande auto turbo diesel with traction and stability did as firstly it had a tag on the refill point and also when I jacked it up both wheels also turned the same way......... http://www.redbook.com.au/cars/resea...Ridx=26&eapi=2 Cheers Steve

The VSC performs the function of an LSD for the front and back. If the centre diff is locked, you lose this functionality.

The VSC is stability control, it doesnt perform the function of an LSD. The traction control is what will get you through or up/over some thing. Yes when you lock the centre diff lock it turns the VSC off but not the traction control, on the 90's and the 120's you cannot turn off the traction control unless you pull the fuse which will then leave a code so not worth the hassle, the 150's you can turn both off if needed which is a great idea. If by locking centre diff lock and driving on sand you dont want the VSC if your cornering as it will take the power away which is what you dont want on sand (same as traction control can do, pain in the arse) BUT would still be handy if driving on dirt roads and want that extra stability at higher speeds and you got a bit side ways or tail happy it would pull you back in line but at the end of the day you just back off and drive to the conditions. And dont forget people think they have full traction because its AWD, if you were to go off road and got say the left front wheel in the air all the power will go to that one wheel so your stuck. if you lock the centre diff lock then its 50/50 so with both rear wheels on the ground it will get you through, if your crossed up diagonally then your screwed thats where a locker would be great.Cheers Steve

I am also looking at an E locker as I'm not having much luck getting a decent price on an air locker!
