On last Toyo service I noticed a lot of black grease that had been thrown out of the uni joists which looked very much like a grease with a moly content, this is a big no no for uni joints as moly tends to "build on its self" which could slightly restrict the grease galleries in the uni-joint.. If there was a slight restrction when you pump grease into uni the grease will flow in galleries with the least resistance, hence if you grease until you hear air escaping "slight popping noise" you may have" not lubricated all four bearing on uni..Alway pump very slow...lly to let lub flow to all four bearing this will also reduce risk damaging the seals.. I pump very slowly until I see lube slightly escaping from all four bearing...
ps Toyo owner manual states a Lithium base NLGI 2 grease in Spiders (uni joints) and only moly type or Lithium in Slide yoke.. Also use a impact resistant and water proof greese "simple test mix some grease with water in parm of hand then place on you work bench and hit it with hammer dont wear your best cloths as you will have a new pattern on your pants" ,I use a Lubrication Engineers product LE1233 it will resist throwing out "yes I work for them :? "If you are in Vic or Tas goto a William Adams "Cat" dealer as they are a reseller "they also have thier own branded product!!!"it is at least double the price of most.. but you get what you pay for.. If you live outside vic or tas give me a message stating were you are I'll find out nearest supplier..

        Hi Bill, The Grease Guru,

The lithium based grease I used last time in the universal joints met the Lithium base NLGI 2 specification but was black and contained a couple of percent of molybdendum in it. Can you please advise if this Penrite grease is suitable for spiders?

        Regards

I would recommend to remove grease from hand and placing on work bench or you could try placing hand on bench and hitting with hammer I think you will see more than grease on your pants..LOL

            Re: Grease Nipples?

The Case of the Naughty Nipples

Since the early 1960s I have been servicing my own and the family vehicles so I have done a lot of greasing of suspension and propellor shafts over the years. Nevertheless I have only had my first Prado and 4WD for a relatively short time and need to build up experience in this regard. I was using a Penrite NGLI2 grease for both the sliding joint and the spiders in the propellor shaft. The Penrite information claimed it was suitable for both and was a Lithium Molybdendum blended grease.

An earlier post in this thread indicated that only a Lithium based grease should be used for the spiders and this agreed with the recommendation in the Prado owners book. So I went out and purchased a K45 Macnaught grease gun and put in a Castrol EPL2 cartridge. Yesterday I serviced the Prado and crawled underneath the animal with my old trusty Macnaught K21 gun to do the sliding joints and the new K45 to do the spiders.

I had trouble getting the K45's coupler onto the first spider's nipple. When I finished greasing it, I found that the naughty nipple would not detach itself from the grease gun's coupler. It had latched on so hard that all the twisting and turning had no effect. Even a large screwdriver could not lever it off. I didn't relish driving through Brisbane CBD in peak traffic with a moderately large grease gun locked onto a universal joint's nipple! In the end I had to get a pair of needle point pliers and a spanner and pull the coupler apart before it would come off the nipple. The same procedure happened on each of the remaining nipples.

But that wasn't the end of my problems. My K21 gun ran out of grease because it pumped grease out of the rear end instead of the coupler - plunger seal worn out! So it took me a couple of hours to grease 6 nipples. The Prado has the naughtiest nipples I have ever come across and I've had a fair bit of experience in this area. If you are scared of nipples, then keep clear of the Prado's!

So I am not the only person having trouble latching off from the nipples    But luckily with alittle bit of pulling I manage to latch off without too much trouble. My gun is also new and I just figured with time the coupler will wear and it will get alot easier to latch off from the nipples.

                  Hey ZAPPER'
Sounds like a whole lot of Nipple tweaking going on around your workshop Mate. On most grease guns the couplers work similar to a drill chuck, turning by hand to adjust the gripping preasure and can be undone to release the Nipple.

Yep done that to adjust the gripping pressure thats why I don't have too much trouble  but I didn't think of adusting it while it was stucked on the nipple . I will try that next time if it doesn't want to unlatch. Thanks for the tip

Need to service the prado this weekend and have read this thread regarding greasing of the yolk and uni joints. Pardon my ignorance, but the above quote suggests both types of grease are Lithium based, so then my question is, can I use a Lithium base NLGI in both the unis and the yolk? If not, can someone please suggest a type of grease for the slide yolk.

                      Cheers

All done. The only issue I had was getting grease into the rear uni joint. The nipple (relax ntpryce) must be blocked, seized or something. Anyway think I got some in there. I will have replace it next service. Has anyone got any idea what size thread it is?
