  • Transfer Case oil leak

    Hi

I have recently noticed a small amount of oil leaking from the Transfer Case . From what I can see it seem to be leaking from the front part of the case, where the front shaft connects. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem :?: If it is just a simple “o” ring seal :?: And could someone (i.e., me) with limited mechanical skills fix it without completely stuffing it up :? :?:

Any help or advice would be great.

    Ryno...... :P

Thanks Joey, that’s music to my ears . Finally got a bit of spending money up my sleeves for Suspension and a set of BFG’s, didn’t want to have to spend too much of it on pesky oil leaks.

Check with the spare parts guys if you need to replace the nut as well.

My front shaft seal was done under warrantee. They seal and nut were replaced.

Job done (I hope), and not a single tool thrown in anger :x (almost though). Replaced the seal and the nut, $32.00 for the both. Needed to buy a new socket set too, what a shame  . The nut was a bugger to get off and the old seal was a prick to dig out, it was totally chewed up, I'm suprised it was'nt leaking more. Time will tell if I fixed it all not.

Hi guys, just read thru this post as mine has also just started to leak in the same spot and it looks like an easy fix, which i'm glad about. I wasn't excited about an expesnive mechanic exercise if i can fix it for $30 odd bucks. Can you by any chance remember the name of the seal when you asked at Toyota? or can you purchase any where else. ie autobarn?

            Thanks for your help

I would recommend that if the seal only costs about $30.00 then head straight to your local Toyota dealer and use Genuine rather than an aftermarket one. Especially from the likes of Autobarn or Supercrap Auto where the guy behind the counter is some 17/18 YO who looks in a booklet and quotes the wrong part for you (more than once. Maybe a few bad experiencs from me).

If the seals are anything like the front diff seals then YOU HAVE TO GO GENUINE becuase nobody else sells the bloody things!

Actually, they're not really that expensive compared to other seals and/or bearings.

Guys if I might ask - to replace this seal, do you undo the 4 nuts holding the universal joint assembly onto the black shaft component that comes out of the transfer case, then slide off the cover, thus exposing the seal and nut? Noticed mine leaking whilst underneath, cleaned it up and went for a drive, but the amount leaking again gives me cause for concern.

                  Chhers,

                  Dave

Just a small question, I need to do this seal as it has started leaking after my play in the mud on the weekend. I can see the drain plug in the bottom left of the case at the back, is the filler plug the one up higher on the right of the case?

I'll be calling Toyota in the morning to get a new seal.

                          Blackvx,

The filler plug is as you've identified on the upper right.

The drain and fill washers are aluminium. If you don't get new ones, I've found using a thread sealant on the threads will ensure there is no oil weap over time. If you use sealant, use the type that stays wet not the drying type like lock tite.

LOL I just called Peter Kittle Toyota and they wanted $1300 to replace, they reckon the whole gearbox needs to come out. I guess they don't actually know how to replace it.
