  • Front propeller shaft play

I've been experiencing a clunking sound when changing between D and Reverse.

With the Mrs in the driver's seat, and instructions to resist the temptation to run me over, I climbed under the vehicle and observed the front propeller shaft clunk one way and then the other whilst she changed between D and Reverse.

With the Mrs safely on the couch, I checked the play in the universal joints (which seemed to be the obvious issue) and could budge them.

But! turning the front propeller shaft is possible by hand - both at the transfer case and front differential ends - representing what I'd consider "excessive play".

The issue is less noticeable, but existent in the rear.

Are my transfer case and front diff stuffed?

Here's a great video, demostrating what happens:

Some comments on other forums indicate this amount of play is normal (but they are Land Rover owners - what would hey know?)

So, comments on the abovementioned youtube clip indicate it is the universal joints. I have sent the video creator a comment, to see what the final verdict was. Waiting on a reply. Edit: Crsig's reply, below!

I also dropped by my local 4wd mechanic and showed them the above video. He seems to think there is too much play in the front differential and has referred me to a differential specailist to have it checked out.

In the meaatime, if anyone has any ideas or comments, please, please, PLEASE let me know!

Yep. That’s my Prado. As I replied in YouTube comment, the Uni joint was shagged. I took the video to a couple of places also who suspected it was a transmission issue as well ($$$$) A couple of good lads at a PP steak night confirmed the uni joint prognosis and we had both uni joints replaced with heavy duty uni joints. All good now.

          Thanks Craig!

I'm hoping to drop by a diff place this afternoon and see what they reckon. I'm sure they'll tell me I need them to recondition it.

But, I'll be replacing the uni joints before Ihabe any work done on it.

I shot my own video last night. I will upload tonight.
