  • Trans oil cooler

G'Day we have a 2005 4L 5 speed Auto with only 140,000km on the clock
Just touching base on combined experence of the group
We recently bought a 19 foot van for small get aways & so forth, will the current standard Toyota trans oil cooler be man enough or should we update to a larger cooler?
Also is it good practice to come back a gear or just leave it in D?
    Thanks

I have an 05 V6 Auto and tow a 1.5t camper. I removed the stock trans cooler and replaced it with the kit from Kaon which uses a Davies Craig 678 trans cooler. I tow in 4th most of the time. I monitor temps with a Scangauge 2 and have Torque Converter temps and the pan temp displayed.

Unlock the TC and the temps go up around 10-15 higher than the pan temp. It generally sits around 70c on the pan temp with a couple of degrees difference with the TC locked, when it unlocks, its a different story. Last summer, the highest i ever saw the TC temp was just under 100c pulling the camper up a long and steep climb.

I also purchased a Wholesale Automatics TC lock up kit, just need to find the time to fit it.
