  • Auto Shift Lever Broken

    Hi all,
I know this topic was discussed in the past.
Nevertheless, this week I joined the "Auto Shift Lever Broken" family.
My gear stick in my 2004 auto has suddenly come very loose and no longer clicks into park or into manual mode. Eg. if I drop into D auto I used to have to push the lever to the right and it would then click into manual 3rd.
When talking to Toyata service they offered to fix it for more than 1300$ american (!!!).
This is outrageous! It is unacceptable that the shift lever which is a human interface gadget will broke by using only human force. This only indicates bad design.
Consulting with local Toyota service guys I was told that if I collect several cars that have the same problem I might have a case.
So, Prodo owners that had this problem please reply this thread with car model, year, chassis number and engine number.
    Thanks.

    Re: Auto Shift Lever Broken

Did you have any joy with Toyota over this? I too have recently joined the "floppy gear lever" club. Mine has failed identically to others described in this forum... small crack in the plastic "bullet holder" means the "bullet" falls out.

      Re: Auto Shift Lever Broken

      Here's a write-up of what I found:

      Floor Shift Assembly
      Part # 33550-60740
Retail price: AU$1200 (but you can haggle it down to AU$929.50)

With the lid popped, the stainless steel “bullet” can be seen in place.

      Bullet, aprox 2 cms long
(mine had fallen out completely and was found on the floor)

      Bullet removed.
Screwdriver points to crack in plastic bullet holder.

Another view of empty bullet holder (crack just visible).
Base of bullet holder is spring-loaded, to push the bullet up against the lid.

After you close the lid, the rounded end of the bullet is forced against the greased tracks above it.
The bumps and curves in the greased track guide the bullet (and hence the gear lever) around the
gate. The spring-loaded bullet holder base gives you the detent around the gate.

If you're lucky the bullet falls out completely, in which case the gear lever is pretty much free to
flop about all over the place. When you don't know how it works, that can be very disconcerting. I was
imagining a nut had fallen off a linkage and that I was about to lose all ability to select gears. I got
it into 'D' and left it there until I got home.

If you're unlucky, the bullet gets a bit sideways and then jams, in which case you have a jammed
gear lever. Although I would imagine using enough force would probably break it free.

        Re: Auto Shift Lever Broken

Thanks for the pics, very interesting indeed. So can't you just use super glue or a hose clamp to fix it?

Many many thanks for the pics.

Another year or so later and craack 'what the'............I am going done the try and drill and possibly sleeve the 'bullet' holder thingy (before selling no1 child for parts cost!

Glue did not do its sticky thing and a plastic weld won't be up to much.

          Regards

Bob c/w sloppy (albeit functional) shifter.....

Any pics etc for the planned rebore coming after I finish 2011 budgets and get a life.

            Re: Auto Shift Lever Broken

My 2004 had the same fault (Toyoto wanted $1,000,00to repair the fault )
Repaired it my self for the price of a drill bit the same dimension as the bullet that Toyoto used but I made it another half lenght longer again also cut the spring down 6-7 mill just enought so when you put the unite back togeather there is a bit of resistance on the spring under the bullet for it to stay firm an do its job ( cost $2)

                Great information, excellent pics
my mistake was braking the two lugs holding the top cover in, NOTE HERE remove the hinge pin, other wise $550.00 from local wreckers or $836.00 plus GST from. Local toyo dealer.
Trip doWN TO AUTO ONE over here $12.00 on good shit glue, (mental note : good shit glue will stick thumb and pointer finger together) two hours later lugs glued back (minus thumb and pointer finger) and all is good.
Test run, reviles that between d and 3rd is now resistance (made new pin to replace shit toyo pin, cut spring to match)

Great description. I can follow the making the bullet bigger and the spring mod but how did you strengthen the plastic collar? I presume the original bullet fell out because the plastic holder was cracked.
Another thread had a stainless collar glued on. There doesn't look to be enough plastic shoulder to 'grab' the glue. Could the collar have an extended plate and a pop rivet or two put in to hold the collar in place around the base of the holder?

Could I repair the assembly in the car rather than taking it out?
                    Sorry for the questions!!!

                      Hey Guys,
I'm currently liasing with a parts guy, who can get a part that should sort these issues out.
When I have mine sorted over the next week, I'll post the details.
2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,
rallye 2000 spots, roof mount dvd, dig_options stereo, toyota roof bars.
                      More to come!

                        OK. Mine is fixed!
Guys, if you have this issue happen on your prado,

ring "All Fourx4 Spares" (02) 4957 1117, Ask for Peter.

The guy is located in NSW, but got stuff to me within 2 days (posted friday, delivered monday)
He supplied a brand new part, for less that what most wreckers are asking. (over here anyway)

I don't know, or are affiliated with the company, but he went out of his way to help me get mine sorted, so I figured a free plug wouldn't hurt.

I am very interested in this.

This is the part that I got.

Then I just swapped out the internals into mine. It replaces the broken plastic collar.
You will need to have the 'metal bullet' and spring from the original still.
As to Price,,, I recieved a lower rate due to helping the guy with photos of what I needed, and waiting etc...
So all I will say, is it came in a lot cheaper than buying one from a wrecker for me.
