Uk_vette,
I now have a repair kit with longer bullet, shorter spring and star push on washer. I also took a whole heap of step-by-step photos. Can't be that much to send over to the UK.
I have replaced the bullet and spring in my Prado and the shift is now smoother going from D to 3 and vice versa (I only have the 4-speed gearbox). I already reapplied the grease when I first took the shifter apart for a measure up a few weeks ago. So my comment about it being smoother does not have anything to do with the re-application of the grease The bullet which is sitting lower inside the collar helps in this way.
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for taking the time and effort to find a way forward for all us "floppy stick folk"
The write up is interesting.
I can understand the collar cracking, or breaking away, but I can't visulise the longer bullet and the shorter spring, how does the new bullet stay in the collar assembly, if it is broken ?
Is it just the top part of the collar that's broken, and with the longer bullet, i sits deeper into the recess?
Any close up picture of the actual collar where the bullet and spring sit in?
Thanks for all,
Vette

See post #3 of this thread for photos. Unfortunately I couldn't take close up pics when I did mine as it was dark and the lighting I had would have cast a shadow from the camera.
I could almost have had a busted shift lever on Moday when the dumb-as-doggy-doo-doo tow truck driver reached into the cabin and tried to force the shifter out of park. Key off and no foot on brake pedal. Luckily I pulled him up in time before he rolled his sleeves up and gave it a good reefing. And I had already told him that the transfer was in neautral and the tailshafts were removed.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.
Thinking out aloud, and looking at Andrew's photos - I was thinking that when I get to do mine I might get some safe-tie wire from work and secure it around the neck of the plastic bullet holder. Hopefully that might relieve any further stress on the bullet holder and prevent the crack from growing in the future.
It doesn't look like there's much room for anything else up there (certainly not a hose clamp), and I doubt that glue would hold for long (if at all, assuming you can remove all traces of grease in there). I reckon once around the holder with the safe-tie will do the trick

I finally got around to installing Andrew's (AMTS) new shift bullet and spring. It took me about 15 mins to do. Here are some pix:
Before
I procured some stainless steel safety-tie wire from one of our engineers, with the aim of minimising any further cracking or stresses from the new bullet. There was just enough room for a single strand to go once around the holder without modifying it. I left the tie in the 10 o'clock position and it doesn't interfere with the stick operation.
Close-up of the tie. You can see three cracks in the holder where the grease has squeezed out after I tied it. I left some DNA on the tie as you can see. That wire's sharp!

Hi The 'Pin"that holds the transmission between 4th and O/drive has broken, now the Stick wobbles between 4th and O/Drive, The transmission still functions perfectly IF I hold the stick in the 4th gear as I wants to drop back into O/D all the time. I have now been told it is a common fault and my Mechanic has quoted me around $1200 inc labour he says the part is around $900 has anyone else encountered this issue?
