  • 120 2006 auto service

hey am I right in saying Toyota does not expect to service auto trans ever?
have a 2006 with 145k and wondering if it should have a service or not and maybe adding a cooler to it.
Diffs are also meant to be non servicable but some fresh oil could not hurt it.
    any input would be great.

Mine was serviced at 200k kms and made a HUGE difference. I now do all my auto trans every 50-60k kms. And notice a difference every time in driveability.

      Thanks Piggy,
being an ex mechanic it just doesn't sit right with me that an AT can be not serviced for life.
how much does it cost and what is actually done?
we would do ATF refresh and band adjustment but hat was a long time ago.

I flushed my ATF myself for what I think was the first time in the car’s history at 216,000km. It was black and didn’t smell good. The gear changes were smooth like new after that. I flushed it again completely 1yr later and will now do it every 50-60k depending on how the gear changes feel from 50k onward. Your car already has a transmission cooler on the front if it’s a petrol. I used Penrite FS fluid (green labelled bottle) for mine both times even though the thinner LV (blue labelled bottle) is Penrite’s recommendation these days. $200 for 16L to completely flush the ATF with a litre or two left over at the end. My trans cops a massive workout going up & down a decent mountain range every day so I just use a slightly thicker fluid for better protection in those conditions. A 120 Prado’s transmission with the same old black ATF in it after 300,000km must be awful when changing to R or D “Thud!” But by then the car is long out of warranty. If Toyota’s ok with the black, burnt ATF being left in the car for life, then I don’t think it’s all that detrimental on what type of fluid you use, so long as it’s mentioned somewhere in the manufacturer’s info that it can be used in lieu of Toyota WS fluid, in which case Penrite’s LV & FS both can be.

I did my 150’s at about 180,000k. Filter and multiple oil changes.
Made no difference to her and that old oil was not pretty.
I did it again after a further 20,000k and oil came out as good as new.
She got Castrol full synthetic which for some reason is about 2x the price of Penrite.
You can get a quote from Ultratune, about $200-$250 which is pretty good considering what’s involved with these “no dipstick” models.
They usually use Penrite and will charge extra for more oil if it looks really bad.

Two of my worst ever experiences with paid mechanical work out of around 5 or so bad experiences were with two different Ultra Tune franchises when I was younger. Maybe they just had their dummest mechanics working on my car when I put it in as some sort of introductory offer. It’s just my personal feeling towards them only from my experiences, but I wouldn’t let them touch my car again if the job was free. I definitely wouldn’t trust them doing an ATF flush. Hell, I wouldn’t even trust them watering my plants. I’ve heard of plenty of not so good experiences with Toyota here too. Hair pulling stuff. I’ve only been to Toyota once where I had them replace rear shock bushes for me on my 90. They did a good job with that. The cost was $400. I was expecting a large bill though due to the difficulty in removing the top nut of those shocks.

Yep, Ultratune franchise experiences are certainly varied. In Gympie, I’ve had a good run.
But Gladstone, that would put me off them forever.

                    Hi guys.
Use my Prado 2008 to tug caravan around. Toyota suggested the auto transmission did not require service, took the car to transmission specialist who dropped the pan to inspect, said the transmission was as good a the day it was made, replaced some of the oil and made a couple of adjustment car had done 200k. Mind you I do nurse the car along.

                      Michaell is yours a 4ltre?
main reason I am looking at this is I am pisking up a new caravan and will be towing around 2 tonne which will give the auto a flogging i would think.
What size van you towing, tarre etc.
Would give the flush a go at home but I don't want to screw around on stands and jack on the new concrete carport floor.
                      Cheers.

No lifting of the car is required to do it, unless you need more room to get underneath of course. Do your research on the procedure though as the fluid needs to be checked at a certain temp with the car running to get the level bang on correct. It’s a potentially messy job though if a Tom Thumb pump is used. Spread a lot of rags, old clothes, towels or an old blanket in the garage floor to prevent any ATF from getting in contact with the concrete.

My van is over two tonnes, transmission check is really about peace of mind. But Prado are made for towing.

Does anyone now what auto model mine would be for a 2006 petrol, I would like to get a filter kit for it and also know what the oil refil amount is.
Also being a sealed box how does one check the oil level once it been warmed up and run through the gears a few times.
Oil grade that you guys use as well.
Anyone used the 1 litre hand pump from SCA, may be worth while as I will do the diff and transfer boxes as well.
                            Cheers

The transmission model is the A750F. You generally don’t need to replace or clean the filters in these as the fine metal mesh screen doesn’t block up. Only in rare cases does it get partially clogged. The re-fill amount is 11 litres, although I buy 16L worth when doing it & generally use around 13L. The oil level would be checked by undoing the small 5mm Allen bolt located laterally between the drain bolt & filler bolt. I’ve exclusively only used the 1 litre hand pump from Super Cheap, had mine for over 10yrs. It will take a little while re-filling with ATF using one of these, but it works well & will also fill your diffs & transfer case. These ATF’s are not as sensitive to fluid type as many would believe or Toyota would lead you believe. Ever since I bought mine I’ve only used Penrite “FS” ATF. It’s slightly thicker than Penrite’s preferred specified LV (low viscosity) fluid which is the same as Toyota’s specified WS (world standard) fluid. The FS fluid I’ve used is a tad thicker, so protects better in my opinion & the transmission changes very smoothly. Definitely better than the black, burnt 200,000km old fluid that was in the transmission when I bought the car that Toyota claims never needs replacing. That old fluid was causing chomping of gears when changing to R or D until I changed it, and now it’s perfectly smooth. It’s a bit of a procedure to change the ATF fluid in these if you’ve never undertaken a task like this before. I’ve done it twice now & know the procedure like the back of my hand. The old fluid is pumped out 2L approx at a time from the ATF cooler in front of the air con condenser.
