  • Prado Possible Gearbox issues. 120 V6 2006 Auto.

    HI Guys,
hope you are well? i have a 2006 Prado 120 V6. Ive had the Prado for 3 Years now, and put 50k km on her. i think i have Box issues but need advice.... so the symptoms are as follow but not limited to...

    1. When starting in the morning and cold, shifting to R and releasing the breaks the car pulls on its own not magically strong and definitely not great like it used to... but when hot and i do the same, the car doesn't move until i use the throttle... Also, when hot, shifting from N to P to R is smooth, but when going from R to D there is a thud!

    2. When driving, there is an audible whine that has developed, more noticeable when cold. almost like a low fluid power steering pump sound.

    3. Gear changes are very smooth from 1st to 4th in most cases but vehicle holds on to 4th and doesn't shift to overdrive unless i lift my foot off the throttle or tap the shifter from D to 4 then back, then she immediately shifts to over drive. Kick down is good but she does not pull as hard as she did... often makes more noise than speed, but rev counter is in time to speedo.

    4. Does not hold speed well, i can get to 120km/h and even on a slit incline she starts lagging slowing down... then shifts down on her own... gets back to 120 and lags again... so low on Torque.

    5. going over a speed bump i will idle over and when i try accelerate there is a rev, i hear fan work and then she selects a gear and goes... almost like she is not shifting to 1st/2nd from a rolling pull off... only happens when going down hill though... even if there is no speed bump and i drive slow down a slight slight incline....

    6. when slow driving on a dirt road with corrugations... she hunts between 1st and 2nd.... often with a slight rev between shifts... like neutral has been selected with out lifting you foot and then she finds a gear only to release it again and hunt...

    7. sometimes.... ill stop at a red light, foot on brake... and i will fell her shift ti 1st at stand still, very slight thud as she changes to 1st gear... but only sometimes....

Prado is heavier on fuel around town, does not have the grunt it used to have when kick down (although kick down is responsive) or flooring it... also, vehicle is a lot rougher than she used to be in ride quality... especially when going over 3500rpm.... i have changed oils and filters hear too.

I have done a fluid and filter change on the box, used about 15liters of AFT WS from the agents.....

does anyone have any ideas... best place to start checking.... The Vehicle has done 300k km and still has the original exhaust with original Cats. could it be a timing issue? throttle position sensor? or any other unobvious cause that could be leading me to believe its the gearbox and Torque converter.

    Thanks in advance.
    regards

Have you checked the engine mounts?

I have not checked anything yet. i though id put the symptoms out there incase someone could advise. on another facebook group someone said that the following_

''Common problem is the Low/ reverse clutch in the transmission right at the back, so a full strip down to replace the plates x8 from toyota at R220 each. Clutch fibres from those plates block the oil filter starving the oil pump feeding the Torque converter , valve body and the solenoids. all the A750f transmissions in the toyota 4x4 are the same but the transfer boxes and torque converters are different. a v6 prado converter is not the same as the 3.0 d4d diesel prado. The transfer boxes are also different on different toyota models. prado is a full time 4 wheel drive transfer box. Some have electronic shift actuators and some are manual shift hi-lo. so find yourself a A750f from a FJ cruiser, hilux, fortuner, prado same to 2017 v6 and just fit your transfer box. If it comes from a diesel you will also need to change the torque converter.''

so now im torn between stripdown or find a good 2nd hand GB... further in the conversation he does mention that all the A750F internals are the same in the GB so i could find a good A750E (2x4)box, strip it and rebuild my box with those internals and get a new TC for my vehicle from the agents.

OR you could do as Piggy suggests and carefully check the engine mounts. These are notorious failure points in the V6 and change the alignment of everything. They are also known to break away/sink into the chassis rail. Do a search on here. It may just save you a lot with any luck.

          Problem:

The Landcruiser has known issues with the automatic gearbox. If you are finding that it is struggling when changing gears, you have an issue with the selectors. This can be a major issue when changing the gears manually. If you want more information about to Analysis business click here Business System Analysis | Definition, Tools & Techniques!

          Solution:

You are best having a professional look at this, as these gearboxes are quite complex. You may have to have some selectors replaced.
