  • transmission noises, intermittently dashboard warning lights, resonance noise at 50kph,

    Hi guys,

2007 GXL V6 4L petrol with 235k km, had since new, mostly city driving with occasional off road (nothing extreme nor heavy towing)

I seem to have four problems that may or may not be related.

    1. the handbrake light comes on/goes off intermittently whilst driving, cant seem to find any pattern to it (maybe happens more when turning a corner...I don't know.... tested the switch with an ohm meter and tests ok. I end up subconsciously checking the handbrake to make sure it's off. Suspecting connection/faulty ECU, but no idea where to look or how to test.

    2. Approaching and at around 50kph there is a hum/buzz/resonant vibration I can hear and also feel through the steering wheel and pedals. almost like loud tyre noise. this can be consistently reproduced. The only thing I can think of that may coincide with this is I had put on a new set of Pirelli all terrains and it kinda started when I pumped them up to 45 psi for longer wear (daughters driving and cornering too fast). That's about the only coincidental info I can think of. Now I'm thinking about it I can drop the pressures and test again. but any advice on potential issues appreciated. I haven't had the transmission fluids changed and I know it's due for that kind of service according to service log book. haven't checked transmission fluid levels, no idea how to...

    3. Similar to number 1 above I have three other dash warning lights come on intermittently. VSC TRC, VSC OFF and the slip indicator (car with wavey lines), again these come on randomly. They dont coincide with the loud humming sound in 2. above. I've read through other articles that suggest it may be sensors but again no idea where to look or how to test.

    4. When sitting at idle in gear, say at a traffic light, every so often the car seems to jump into gear and I get a light jump forward. nothing huge, feels like someone has bumped very softly into me from behind. happens once a month..maybe

Generally the car doesn't feel like it should, as though it's dragging a little and needs more throttle.

I'm quite technical as an electronics and electro-mechanical engineer, just not with cars.

I'm in Sydney, Baulkham hills area, so any advice on repairs, where to take it or even if I should send it off for auction would be appreciated. It's been the best car, possibly even better than my 1997 Prado.

    cheers,
    Darren

With many Toyotas random warning lights can mean the alternator is on the way out - have you checked battery voltage when running - should be something around 14v and stable.

The tyre thing sounds like unbalanced wheels.

Maybe it's time for at least a transmission service - drain and change the fluid plus change the filter. Level can be checked using the dipstick if you have one, otherwise it's a bit of a long process on non-dipstick boxes. If you do check via the dipstick you have to do it with the transmission hot and with the motor running.
