Dis-engaging / Whining type sound from drivetrain...

Hi,

Am experiencing a dis-engaging / whining type sound from somewhere in the drivetrain (Dec 2004 V6, 5 speed auto) ...:

It occurs after reversing ( like out out a driveway, turning left or right onto the road whilst reversing ), and then selecting Drive and turning wheels in direction of required travel, at this point transitioning ( in Drive) to straight-ahead, after about 1 to 2 metres of forward travel, I get the dis-engaging / whining type sound for 1 second, and then its gone.

Appreciate a steer on this or any further trouble-shooting I can do.

Other than that, the vehicle is going ok.

Check your centre diff lock isn't engaging somehow?

Thanks.. I haven't noticed the diff-lock indicator light coming on when reversing.
Thinking about it, its like a "releasing" sound.

Sounds like its getting trans wind up perhaps. This happens if its centre diff is locked on bitumen.

The stubby little lever for the centre diff lock is definitely down in the unlocked position ( sadly, most of the time nowadays).
Centre diff lock Indicator light definitely not coming on under normal driveway maneuvers.
Will keep troubleshooting, when cold/hot, turning circle tightness etc, so I can repeat the conditions and pay attention to that, as it doesn't do this all the time.

So its definitely happening with the steering transitioning from a left or right lock to the straight-ahead-forward travel, after having reversed some distance ( 12 to 20 metres ), this situation/noise is more apparent when cold.
I'll reverse into my driveway ( about 15 metres ) , stop the vehicle, leave it overnight, then in morning drive straight ahead, turn left ( almost full lock ) onto the road, and at that point, as its transitioning to straight ahead, you'll hear this noise as previously described.

Also when it happens, at night (i.e. headlights on), I've noted each time ( twice now ) the headlights dip momentarily at the same time as the noise, so something is loading/unloading.
No other ancillaries are on (A/C etc).
I cannot recreate the noise after the vehicle is fully warmed-up.
