    Hi Andrew,

Yes I did switch the car off to top it up - while the car is running it is pumping fluid out of the trans cooler line so I took 2 litres out, switched the car off and then topped up with 2 litres in then repeated until I had flushed 12 litres through.

Yes I also ran the car through the gears but only after I had completed the full flush and while the car was stationary in order to ensure that the fluid had circulated throughout the whole box before placing it under load by driving it.

Hi hisham, when you say you disconnected the hoses do you mean from the little oil cooler infront of the radiator, I cant seem to find the fill plug. I found the drain plug and a plug with a hex key needed near the drain one which says inspect or something.

Hisham hasn't been on the forum for quite some time.

I presume you have a V6 given you have an oil cooler? Do you also have a cooler in the radiator with the V6?

The diesel I have doesn't have the external oil cooler so I disconnected the line to the radiator cooler, if you have the external cooler it shouldn't matter which one you disconnect.

          Cheers Andrew

Hi andrew yeh I have the petrol model, I found the cooler it is an external one in front of the radiator so at least I found that, so all I really have to do is drain the trans, top up what I drained, disconnect the top hose on the cooler (I assume thats the out let hose) turn over the car pump out what I filled and keep topping up and repeat until it comes out fully clear, sounds easy enough, I think

took my Prado to 4x4 & suspension for Auto Flush, old fluid was dirty, but had a tinge of red still in it, after 5 flushes by ####, now redish colour, while there #### did the AMTS Auto shift lever fix, plus grease & check over, big thanks to #### for Quality work at a very reasonable price....highly recommend 4x4 & Suspension if you are in Melbourne.

              Cheers

Haha, you finally made it to get that auto job done.

I suppose it was good to do the shift lever kit too, it was a first for me.
                Very simple job.
Anyone who wants to get that fix or prevention I think it's a good idea & cheap fix.
However I did notice it is slightly firmer after replacing the part, in particular 1-2 shift.
                But good overall.

Today, 120D4D and myself got together to do the auto transmission flush. He has the 5 spd D4D and I had the 4 spd V6.
We used 10mm clear hose from Bunnings and it comes in a 5m length.

Here is a photo of the radiator on the driver's side on the D4D. This is the outlet port with the clear hose attached. The clear hose is taken down to the ground where we used a 3L container with markings at 500mL intervals to measure what was coming out.

For the V6 4 spd, the 10mm clear tube was attached to the top port of the transmission cooler that is mounted on the front of the radiator. Didn't take a picture of this. The top port of the transmission cooler (coloured red below) is the outlet.

120D4D used a Tom Thumb to refill his through the filler plug on the transmission.

To refill my 4spd gearbox, it had a dipstick. The opening isn't quite that big for the funnel that I have so I got a nozzle used for sealant cartridges and attached it to the end. Here's a pic of the funnel and you can see the white part which is the nozzle. The funnel had a wire tied around it to keep it upright while pouring the new fluid in.

The general procedure is to remove the transmission sump plug and collect the old fluid and measure it. Then add the same amount of new fluid back in.
Start the engine and let 2L out at a time and refill with the same amount of new fluid. Keep doing this until the fluid comes out nice and red.

All up, we took 3 hours to do both Prados. Very happy now that both gearboxes has nice clean red fluid running through it.
120D4D used genuine Toyota ATF WS.
                  I used genuine Toyota T-IV.
We both bought 3x 4L bottles/tins. 120D4D has a bit left over as there appears to be a bit extra in each 4L tin. I used up all 3 bottles.

Nice write up AMTS. This is on the long list of the jobs to do.

Out of curiosity what is Toyota charging for the WS fluid?

The job is best done earlier than later. The fluid was black on the diesel and mine was very dark red at 183K km. The transmission cooler may have helped keep the fluid in reasonable condition for longer.

                      $165 for 3 tins.

That's not bad. Cheaper than ZF transmission oil. $50 - 60 a litre.

I'll have a few days off over xmas to spend some quality time in the shed.

The V6's have a transmission cooler as standard, for, some reason they never put these in the diesels.

                              Cheers Andrew
