HID headlight for 120 prado

Don't know about you guys but putting HIDs in a headlamp with reflectors that are not designed for HID will dazzle oncoming drivers. I certainly get annoyed by this. HIDs require self-levelling headlights (not suspension but I like the way of thinking) and headlight washers to be legal.

correct, putting HIDs into reflectors is a big FAIL, did it once and regretted it. Put HIDs into Projector type headlights ONLY!

they need to be self leveling and you need to have headlight washers installed if u want to worry about all legalities

Thats a good point thanks for the info raydes, how did you find their direction was low beam to high and blinding other drivers?

I fitted some on my Prado ,I found I had to leave the rubber dust seals off ,wouldn't fit with the new globes , The headlights fill up with dust or water when crossing deep crossings, I was always trying to clean them out. I refitted the original globes to fix it , anyone want some HID lights cheap.

This sounds very promising. From my point of view, I'd like to hear of someone who's made the swap on the following:

- Improved beam distribution than standard headlight?
- On the HID upgrade, what happens when you flash your high beam (I assume we're talking of HID on both high and low beam), does the high beam light instanlty at full intensity, or does it have to "warm up"?
- Will this work for my LHD car as well?

I have been in touch with the local guy here in Adelaide. He is pricing up a set of twin projetor lights for the 120 series. These lights will be similar if not the same as Mars performance sell on Ebay. He will also price up the hid kits to upgrade the lights if you want them in HID. (H1+H3)
He knows what Mars sells them for and said he can smash that price out the water. He is also going to cost up a group buy of 5 sets to start with.
I will be getting a set of these lights for myself, but thought id see how cheap i can get a few for. Plus he is here in Adelaide, so we get out of shipping and have local warranty and support.
Ill post up results when i get them

The Prado 120 uses a single bulb for both low and high beam (H4). So, one can't upgrade only the high beam, it's both (bi-xenon) or nothing.

I got a chinese bi-xenon kit (with the slimmer balasts) off eBay a couple of years ago. No problems since. The improvement was vast and there has been no deterioration since. The down side is my beam's upper cut-off isn't as sharp as it was, with light "escaping" upwards. This must be a bit dazzling to oncoming drivers. I thus have to keep the beam turned downwards, unless on empty roads. However this is an issue with the HID bulbs as I recently saw a passing Prado 120 that had a perfect beam cut-off. Unfortunately he drove by before I had time to ask him where he got his kit.

Yes, the standard headlight design in the 120 Prado is total crap. It may well be a common Toyota trait as my wife's Yaris was of the same despicable effectiveness. In contrast, my Saab 900's H4 non-HID headlamps (coupled with upgraded bulbs) turn night into day, lighting far further ahead without dazzling oncoming drivers.

I have been looking at this for a while now. It seems you can try your luck with chinese made ballasts, but the safer choice is USA or German made ballasts. Naturally this means cost at about $175 to $205 for a high/low beam H4 globe and ballast etc.

That said, I have shyed away from changing my normal street and high beams in favour of updating the IPF spotties only. This is because those that I have talked to advise:
- not much is gained on the normal/driving lights
- they upset oncoming drivers or have to be "angled" too low thus losing the benefits
- legally you must have self levelling lights

Of course it is your choice, and even though I have a grande with leveling suspension(can interpret this as lights in my mind at least) I see no real advantage to justify the cost at the present time, but remain open to persuasion.

Since he is in adelaide, i am going to get a kit off him and have a look at the quality. I have 55w Bi Xenons in my lifted 120 and think they are awesome. Going to get another kit for the wifes car

MLC might be worth getting in tough with him of you are in the market for a kit, he is local to us

Thanks Rob I also have the grande so sit in the same boat as you,but just find my normal driving lights are really bad.And you cant have a spottie on all the time so need to look at getting a better allround low beam light.
this is why i was thinking of the HID option.

Hi there I want to upgrade my headlights to a HID kit but would like to know what HID kits are recommended for 120 Prado. I have seen many different makes for sale but would like to know from you ,that have installed them which ones are worth wile as there are some cheap ones available but not sure of the quality of the product.
Please let me know the make model and supplier.
